Many of you are already aware of Rick Schmidt's musical prowess through examples such as GoodBye Porkpie Hat and accompanying forum thread as well as other YouTube posts. Fortunately for us left-coasters he has finally been persuaded to give an introductory class in Jazz C6th (or B6th for us uni's) at Steel Guitars of North County on Saturday, November 21st from 11AM to 2PM. The address is 3375 Mission Ave. Suite D in Oceanside, Calif. The cost is $25.00 and you will get your money's worth from this amazing musician. Please, due to spacial and noise limitations, if you need to bring an amp be prepared to bring and use headphones only as no other amplification will be allowed. Also be prepared to take whatever notes you feel appropriate. Also because of the spacial considerations the class will be limited in size and reservations are required so please make them early by calling 760-754-2120 Tues-Sat- 10AM-4PM.

David, could you get him to swing by here and pick me up on the way? Laughing Wouldn't mind leaving behind this snowy weather that's for sure! Seriously, I bet it would be a great class. I always enjoy Rick's insightful posts on the forum and found a few videos of him playing on youtube. Great stuff! Wish there were more. (And wish I was closer).

Guys, If I had to gt up early enough to get to Jim's place by 11, I'd look like this:

Plus I'd be so tired I'd fall asleep in the middle of the class. Trust me, you DO NOT want to hear me snore.

Driving from LA? Heck, if I didn't have a gig on the 21st I'd be gassing up the truck for this one! Rick's a great player, and a real nice guy. Some of you N. CA pickers just might consider getting in on this one.

Just want to thank Brother Palenscar for coming up with this idea, crazy as I thought it was at first. Also, all the kind words from all my illustrious colleagues! Shocked

I've been thinking alot about how to approach this class-workshop-seminar, and I think since there already seems to be various levels of players showing interest, I'm probably going to start with questions and answers just to get a feel for the common ground. I'll be focusing on my approach to harmony and improvisation from the C6th perspective...how to build chords from the root up and substitutions etc. I'll do my best to draw correlations between C6, Universal and E9 tunings whenever possible.

I'll also show how to do the cool bar trick on the Youtube that Jim was kind enough to link to. (You might want to check out some of the related vids on that page, like "Since I Fell for you" or Don't Let Go". I use a more conventional technique on those) Embarassed

p.s. Mike P.....hope I'm through vomiting by 11AM. Winking

Hey guys!
Trust me on this one ... if you want to get your C6 together this is the way to do it! Rick's playing on BOTH necks is MIND BOGGLING! So go - you won't regret it. It'll be the best $25 you ever spent. I guarantee it!

Rick -

I'm signed up for this class and have couple a quick technical questions about your C6 copedent.

Will you be playing a C6 with a "G" or "D" on the first (top) string?

Are there any levers or pedals on your C6 setup beyond the "standard" (as seen in Winnie Winston's "Pedal Steel Guitar" book e.g. Jimmy Day's http://b0b.com/tunings/stars.html#C6jd) 5 pedals and 1 knee lever?

Thanks!

While Rick has some cool changes on his guitar (and a D on top as I recall), the meat and potatoes of this seminar will be directed at demystifying the neck that so many of us use as an arm rest. In many ways it is easier than the E9th neck that so many of us have become fairly comfortable with and I am really excited about what Rick is offering to share. The seminar is almost full already- maybe he could be persuaded to do another for those unfortunate souls who can't make it to this one and hopefully more after that expounding on this first seminar.

Hi John...thanks for asking. Actually my current steel has 11 strings on C6, so I've got both worlds. I was a stubborn holdout for the G on top until relatively recently. Now honestly I'm a little ashamed, since the D on top is way more usable IMHO. Either way, I'll address both ways to go on the top string on the 21st.

I've thought long and hard about my copedent over the years, and I think that eventually every steel player needs to seek out their own ideal setup. It's our heritage as pedal steel players to entertain our own ideas on how to use the technology of strings, tone bars, and levers to make our own personal muses happy. I'm not a huge fan of standardization, but the basic 5+1 setup is a great place to start! There's a lifetime of learning on any setup, but there are alot of ideas out there that should definitely be considered by the serious student.

There are a number of players who are not bringing their steels-- some just taking notes or video-taping the seminar. I doubt that this will be presented in a format that "hot-licks" will be given to be practiced in front of the instructor much to the embarrassment of the student but will be more like "here is what to think about and do when playing certain chord type and the attending harmonies involved". Maybe Rick can find the time to chime in here but I wouldn't go overboard trying to get your C6th licks up to snuff before the seminar because a)you'll never catch him and b)it's probably not necessary for this particular seminar.

Don't miss this class!
Rick has a minor third lower change on strings 9 and 10 that is too cool. I put it on all of my guitars. He might get into how he uses that change, although it is pretty non-standard.
A very innovative player. Everyone will benefit.
