Jeff Newman: "The Last Letter"

Post by Frank Freniere »

Not looking for tablature, just the song with Bob Browning on vocals. Did Jeff ever record this? I have part of a live performance of "Letter" on a scratchy cassette recorder from a seminar in '82 or '83. Fran doesn't have it. Thanks!

Frank, if Fran doesn't have it, would that mean that Jeff and Bob never actually recorded that one?
If you are asking that someone recorded it at a seminar..... I can't ever remember that Jeff and Bob did this one. That's not to say they didn't. It might be very rare!

Hi Bent -

I'm afraid you're right: apparently Jeff and Bob never recorded "Last Letter" for commercial release or otherwise. I was hoping Fran might have a copy in the archives somewhere. Failing that, I was hoping someone had a recorder on when they did do it live - like at that long-ago seminar.

Maybe someone has contact information for Bob Browning, who maybe has a bootleg copy ....

I have it on one of Jeff's "tracks" tapes.... Steel Tracks 1 if you're looking just for Bob...but vocal and rhythm only..no steel. It was one of Jeff's play along tapes on how to back the singer. I'm not aware of anything on this tune that they recorded commercially either, but they did a lot of things together so they might have done it at a show or seminar.

If you'd be interested in other versions, Asleep at the Wheel did it with Chris O'Connell on vocals. There are countless other versions, I'm sure probably including the original one.

Frank,
I have an instrumental version of it on my CD "Pure and Simple". Unfortunately, I don't have any left at this time or I would send you a copy. I do have the "tracks" without my steel and also chord sheets (not tab) if that will help you.
A friend of mine in California knows how to send a file (MP3?) via Email and he should be contacting you shortly to email you the tune if it will be of any help. It's one of my all time favorite songs.
