As best I remember this, it was 1978 in Nashville during Fan Fair at the Ramada Inn. I'd post the names but I thought it would be fun for some of you to put the names with the faces.

Duane Marrs is in the front, center. I'm still trying to figure out who the other guy is.
Larry Marrs is left of Doug & Kenny Penny.

I guess I came along a little too late for this one. I wouldn't know Duane in this picture but knew him well from 82 till last year. You can tell by Dougs right hand technique and I kind of guessed that was Paul. Man time flys by! |

Randy, I can't believe how young Duane looks there. Youthful. I wished I had known him back then. Great pictures. |

And speaking of remembering.............Randy I remember when you first played the ISGC. I believe you were eleven at the time. I spoke to you after you played and you were so upset because you made a mistake. Show me someone who does not make mistakes infront of so many steel pickers. I remeber Tom Brumley saying he was always nervous playing at a steel convetion. Anyway, Randy, I have admired you and your music every since.
Thanks for the pictures.

Here's one that shows Gregg better. Looks like he's playing one of those $12.00 chords.

Randy my four year old granddaughter just payed me the best compliment of all. She looked at the picture of Blake and Zane and said look papa..it's you. I could never match my friend's playing but what a treat for her to notice. |

Randy,
Should we know who the guy is on the far left in the last of the original group of photos? If not, we'll quit wracking our brains. If so, give us a hint, please. |

Jeff,
It was my 75' Black Emmon's Push Pull. I played it up until the Franklin's debut. I had an MSA and two Sho-Bud's before that Emmon's guitar.

Theresa, I don't know either. I was hoping someone knew. I think there is another roll of film that was taken along with these. Maybe I can find it and something there will jog my memory. |

Thanks for sharing the pictures, Randy! They were from about a year after the first time I visited Nashville.
When I was there I remember seeing Paul Franklin and Mike Smith at Demon's Den playing lots of intricate harmony parts at break-neck speeds. I ran into Buddy Emmons at the bar. Then a short time later I saw Jimmy Bryant, Johnny Gimble and Terry Crisp (who I had never heard of,) at a jam session at what was then the Rhinestone Cowboy, downtown. It was the first time I'd seen any of them live and in person. What a rude awakening! After all that, I was about ready to sell all my stuff right there. Sheesh...
Who's the little guy in front of Paul? That's not you, is it? _________________ My best,

The ShoBud Johnny is playing looks like it must be a cousin of Russ Hicks' "ElDorado". I wonder what ever happened to Johnny's guitar?
I also notice a Deckley decal on the headstock of the guitar visible behind Johnny's head. Did Deckley make some guitars?
Kenny Penny sure looks like Steve Wariner.
Neat pictures Randy, thanks! |
