The Oxfords are getting tired in my '71 Twin. What should I put in there for replacements that would be steel-friendly? I'm not going with a 15; I want to stay with 12's because I double on guitar, and also because I like the sound of the 12's in a Twin. I understand that D120f's would be ideal, but I don't want to go into a set of speakers for $500. I'm basically looking for a decent new set that would stay clean. Thanks! _________________ Jackson Steel Guitars

I have just gotten the Weber 12" Neo for a 2x12 cab to use with my '70s Dual Showman Reverb head. This speaker sounds very similar to the JBL D120F, but maybe is not quite as clean. Another option I would be interested in trying is a couple of 12" Black Widow neos. They are more heavy duty than you need, but the neo magnet keeps them from being so heavy. They will definitely be cleaner and crisper than old Oxfords or Jensens. They are designed to sound similar to JBLs, but will be cleaner. |

Chris, I'm really digging Ted Weber(RIP!)'s speakers. The Alnico California will be the closest to a JBL, but a bit pricey. The Ceramic California will be a little cleaner and brighter, but quite a bit cheaper. The Neo is closer to the Alnico Cali and JBL in tone and headroom.
If you order from Weber, you can ask them to break the speakers in for you. Highly recommended! |

Eminence Delta Pro 12A is what I have in mine.
Lot of us guys in Nash are using them. |

I used a weber 12F150 on my build of a DR clone. I think it sounds good for both steel and guitar. I am thinking about building a twin clone this winter. If I do, I am going to use a couple of these with 50W coils. _________________ Charlie Powell |

Great sounding speaker, I've got two myself! I'm not so sure they'd have enough headroom for a twin with steel? They JUST cut it for clean steel with my 60 watt Garnet. |

Thanks for the suggestions, men. The Weber does sound like a viable option. I wonder how stock Fender Eminences would sound? I guess the price between the Weber and those wouldn't be much different anyway. I had a Weber California alnico and it broke up pretty fast. I guess the ceramic might be better. _________________ Jackson Steel Guitars

If your Twin is otherwise clean and original, probably a good idea to save and store the Oxfords(maybe recone them, too)for when you need to sell the amp. |

Chris, try replacing just one of the speakers with a JBL type (Weber, Black Widow). I'd be willing to bet you will like it better than two JBLs.
Try it, you'll like it! |

Yes, Dave, I will definitely hold onto the originals, although I wouldn't recone them. I'd rather get a replacement(s). Dan, that sounds very interesting. I think I'll try that first! _________________ Jackson Steel Guitars

You may want to consider Tone Tubbys or the Eminence Cannabis Rex which uses Tone Tubby cones and costs a bit less. Seemed like a fad to me, but I have a Cannabis Rex 10 in a 67 Princeton which is very stiff and doesn't break up, but at the same time is pretty warm sounding. |

Tony, I too like the sound of the Deville, especially for guitar. These are worth considering as well.
I have decided to go with a 212 cab for my spilt cab project (Bassman 100 head), and need a set of 12's that complement both steel and guitar and can handle 100 watts and not break up. The search continues..... _________________ Jackson Steel Guitars

Chris, I had the same set-up, a Bassman 100 head and (until last week)a 2x12 cabinet. My favorite combination of speakers was a Peavey 1203-8 and an EVM12L (also 8 ohms), for a combined load of 4 ohms. I thought it was a terrific combination, albeit heavy. |

I would definitely use Ted Weber speakers, i replaced the old 12" Marslands in my Vintage Traynor, omg what a weight reduction and did yah know that Ted Weber is also building speakers for Fender now? What does that tell you?? Do your research and i think you will be suprised. Rest In Peace Ted Weber, we will all miss you!!!! _________________ "Steel players are like fine wine, we get better with age" |

I had a twin with Jensen neos that I thought worked well- and I could actually lift the amp. |

I got a single Altec 417 8H Series II (12" speaker) a while ago and found it to be superior to the Oxfords in my 76 Twin.
I found a second 417 8H on the web and they are both now housed in a cabinet on top of which my original '76 sits (I do not want to modify the 76 in any cosmetic way at this time).
The Sound from the two Altec 417 8H Series II is phenominal.

I hear great things about the Altec. My buddy James Morehead really likes them, and they sounded great in his setup when I played through it.
I have just purchased two EVM 12's here on the forum. I'll see how they pan out. Thanks everyone for your input! _________________ Jackson Steel Guitars

Ha! Thank you, Scott! Well, at least they won't have transformers attached to them. They'll be in a separate cab, thank God!! Rick Johnson is building me a split head/cab as we speak, so I'm excited about it all, to say the least. _________________ Jackson Steel Guitars
