Hi Steel Forum - I've never posted here before, but I've been reading for awhile, so let me first just give a big THANK YOU, because I've learned an awful lot.
My taste is more in the direction of 30s bakelite Rickenbachers, but I just won this Gibson on ebay. I had put in a low bid several days ago, expecting to be outbid, and to my surprise, well, I won. Seems like a good deal. Does anyone know if these Gibson PAF pickups sound as good as the classic spanish guitar PAFs? I'd imagine they're not as highly coveted over here as a nice horseshoe. Love to hear any thoughts on em.

Hey Robbie, welcome to the boards. Really nice console you won there, congrats!
Interesting layout of the tuners, I've never seen 'em like that.
Best of luck with it. Would love to hear some audio/video if you can! _________________ Lap-n-Console Steel Guitar Lessons |

Welcome to the board. Wow, what a great price!
I'm kind of tempted by a 7+8 at my local store. It's a 1940 grand console with the Charlie Christian pickups, and unfortunately they want a grand and a half for it. Perhaps it should be called a 1 1/2 Grand Console? |

Congratulations on the new acquisition.
I have access to two HOT Rickenbacher's, B-6 and B-7
in addition to a post war model.
All three have been owned and played by a very famous steel player and possess a great history.
If interested, drop me a line. |

Interesting design on the tuner set-up. Having the strings run straight off of the nut to the tuner shafts is an advantage I would think. It appears to be quite an original instrument. |

Cool guitar Robbie. It will be interesting to see if they are truly PAF humbucking pickups or "PAF era" pickups. If they are the former, they should sound GREAT (and huge!). I am very curious to find out... |

I made that first post right after I won the auction, so I don't even have the steel yet, but it should be in the mail. Putting the cart before the horse I guess. I've tried to find out more information about those pickups, but there isn't a lot out there. There's a nice page about them in the new Duchossoir Gibson Steel book, but even that doesn't explain too much.
I have a real PAF from the same year in a great tele that's my favorite "spanish" guitar, so I can try a side by side comparison of an open chord, just for fun. I'll report back about it next week for sure. I'm happy to take more and better pictures of the pickups and tuner area too. Glad y'all think this is an interesting instrument. I'm surprised I haven't seen more of them around. |
