Great playing indeed. I remember back about 2004 I saw a double 10 Mullen used pedal steel advertised in the used section at Carter Steel Guitars that they said belonged to the late Gary Hogue and it had dual pickups on each neck...I have wished time and time again that I had bought it.

Terry, thanks so much for posting these videos.

They bring hack great memories of when I got started playing steel in 1981.

One of the first times I ever heard Gary was when he and Junior played Somewhere Over The Rainbow at a steel show around 1982 or 83 I think.

Junior,Gary H, and Gary Carpenter were (and still are) three of my biggest influences.
Cops aren't paid much so I steel at night.

GH lick at 1:12

Post by Billy Carr »

I really enjoy watching Jr. & Gary play but there's a lick on Together Again I'm curious about. In the IV chord at about 1:12 Gary was dropping something as soon as he got into the IV chord. Any ideas? Hope it's ok to ask. I'd like to add this lick to the few I know. Thanks. ( only out of respect)

Hi, Billy ...
At that spot in the song, Gary is raising his fifth string and counterpointing that by dropping his seventh string a whole tone. :)

Thanks. I'll add the change to my guitar and start using the lick. Still learning after 38 years. Ha!

As an interesting note (from Gary's Copedant), the knee lever Gary had that change on (which is the same as mine ... we both played the exact same guitar setup) pulls the raises the first string a whole tone and drops the seventh string a whole tone.
