When I discovered, acquired and refurbished my fabulous Volu-Tone amplifier (just like JERRY BYRD's)
I had to promise my lovely wife that I would not purchase any more guitars as I was all out of necessary wall hangers for them. I ask her to trust me and as a result, she allowed me to ride in the car on the return trip from SanFrancisco where I had just had the Volu-Tone rebuilt.
Well, it was unintentional and was not a malicious act on my part but.......... I am guilty of a slight falsehood.
I took delivery this date of one of the most beautiful guitars I've ever seen. It's a dark walnut, single-8, stand-alone Rickenbacher Hawaiian steel guitar, JERRY BYRD model. Absolutely beautiful! Sounds WONDERFUL! What a guitar!
NOW, my Rickenbacher/JERRY BYRD steel guitar collection is COMPLETE. I promise not to buy any more g'tars. (X) |

It was a long walk from SFO to PDX and I wanted to hear the newly restored amp with my Rick plugged in.
I wanted back in the car.

I too have walked a few miles in that same situation, Sucking up concrete,[ That ole park bench get's sore around 3 AM] doing what i beleived in with a 'Suitcase' and a 'Steel'

Ray, my wife forebids me from going to steel guitar shops and other music and electronic stores. She calls them "evil places", because every time I go in one. Someone will try to sell me something. Prime example not far from where I live there is gentleman that I am proud to call a friend who builds steel guitars. He sold me my 1977 Emmons PP back in 1998, while I was there at his shop he proceeded to show me his amps and other equipment that sold. My wife which was my girlfriend at the time put the old kibosh on me. In fact back a few years ago we went out to his shop again and he showed me a new model steel that he had just built. I sat down behind it and started playing it. My wife said NO Tommy!
I look at it this way, I rather buy stuff related to my playing than to spend on another woman. Because to my wife, my music is THE OTHER WOMAN! |

My house is on a hill. The front is two stories higher than the back. So the main floor, with living room, dining room, kitchen, bathroom and three bedrooms is at ground level at the front, and on the third storey at the back. Conversely, my den, which is in the sub-basement, is at ground level at the back of the house. As I drive up to the house, if I coast the last 20 yards, no-one can hear me drive up. My car is then out of sight-line from the living room. If I carry instruments along the side of the house, into the conservatory under the deck, I can enter directly into my den without going through the house.
It's a great boon when I acquire new instruments and equipment.  
Another method is to leave the house with an empty instrument case, and come back with a full one. Then, when questioned, the response is, "Didn't you see me leave with this old thing this morning ?" |

| Hi Ray, I must say I regret selling this one, but I know she is in good hands and with someone who appreciates things of beauty, your guitars are proof of that. (amazing collection). Great to see you and you beauties in person yesterday, I learned a few things from one of the veterans. Thanks for the hospitality. As for this being your last guitar, it's not nice to tell a lie. I learned years ago to keep my wlfe ignorant about musical instruments,she would'nt know a stella guitar from a Martin D-45,if I bring something new in,I just say [Oh this old thing,I traded Larry something for it.]And I'm not telling her a lie,My friend Larry runs a music store. DYK?BC.

Has it not occurred to you that wives and girlfriends are reading this right now? They don't have to be members...even if they don't see it themselves, they have friends...
All good ideas though. I love the "leave with an empty case, return with it full" idea. Remember to handle it as if it were full. Even if she/he isn't home, a neighbor/friend might be. I will be using that idea. |

I allways try to check the e-mails before my wife does,She gets these from people like AVON telling her about their BIG sales,I DELETE these,sometimes she spends enough on this junk that I could buy ten sets of new strings.Guys you GOT to learn to stay one step ahead of them. It's hard work,most of these gals are sly as a fox and vicious as a mama grizzly. I'm not talking about Tammy,I KNOW you are a good lady. DYK?BC.

I once did that through customs. I left the USA for England with a lap steel that I built for Basil: I came back three weeks later with a different steel that I'd had stored at Basil's place.  |
