Foolin' Around on an old 'Bud

Post by Chris LeDrew »

This is me cat-shaggin' around on an early '70s S10 'Bud I just got from Bobbe. It was an impulse buy, but against my better judgement I'm warming up to it. It took me a while to dial it in, and I'm still tweaking it. I'm running it through an old Deluxe with an analog delay. These little guitars can be fun to play. A little clanky, yes.....but fun.

I'm more of a "back up the singer" type of player than an instrumentalist, so I'm just improvising here to show the how the guitar sounds.

Chris; I just had the same spur-of-the-moment, whim-thing happen to me last week! I have a wonderful ’05 Burgundy D-10 Derby PSG, but; I saw this good-looking D-10 Sho-Bud Pro II CUSTOM here on the Forum and since my Sho-Bud days go all the way back to the beginning in ’57, I thought it would be nice to have Sho-Bud (#15 for me)! Likewise it needed considerable re-adjusting and a few KL's reversed, but; I've got it all working great now and it's time to sit back and enjoy it!

Marc, so glad you like it! As you know, these guitars are a riot once you get them dialed in.

John, sounds like you know what I'm going through with the impulse 'Bud purchase. Hope you're enjoying yours as well. :) Even though they're not for everyone, it's sure nice to have at least one kicking around, whether it's for nostalgia or the reminder that these old guitars had premium tone.

Chris, that really sounded great. As I understand it, you were using analog delay and no reverb. Tell us how you set up the delay.

Lee, thank you very much. So glad you liked my meandering, aimless riffing. It's what I'm best at! :)

The delay is an original '80s Ibanez AD9:

Image

Knob 1 is for speed (10 being slowest and 2 being fastest), knob 2 for feedback (amount of repeats), and knob three for delay volume. I had the speed on 6, feedback on 7, and volume on 3. Seeing that my Deluxe is non-reverb, I was basically manipulating the delay to give me a reverb-type sound, with a low volume, sluggish speed, and lots of repeats. I would have used reverb if it was on the amp, but I'm not unhappy with what happened with the delay. I'm actually trying this configuration on a gig this weekend. The signal doesn't seem as washed to me as with reverb, although it's probably just a passing fancy.

Right at 1:47, you can hear the nature of the delay when I stop suddenly. It might give you a better idea of how I have it set up.

Chris; I'm not usig my stomp-boxes at the present time, because; I got a very good deal on a used Alesis QuadraVerb~Plus, however; when I do use the stomp-boxes, one of my favorites among them is my (also Original) Ibanez AD-9 Analog~Delay! Often I use just the Delay blended with the Amp. Reverb!

I actually ended up using a modded Boss DD2 this weekend; it had an added switch for a more muted, analog-sounding delay option. My tech wired it up, and it strikes the perfect balance between warm sound and clean repeats. I must find the name of the mod and post it here, but it's going to be my choice for steel delay for the foreseeable future. I did add a bit of amp 'verb in, but not very much.

Very nice, Chris! Great Sho-Bud tone. I had the same guitar and amp, '66 Deluxe Reverb, a couple of years ago... a nice combination. Thanks for sharing your sound with us.

Thanks for checking it out, Doug! It was my pleasure to throw it together. Just one take and away I went. Sometimes it's fun to just post something rough. The playing ain't perfect, but it's real. :)
