We're working on small travel documentary soundtrack and were fleshing out an original piece with the mic set up. It's a rough improvisation with one room mic, but I'm posting this because I finally got a decent singing overdrive out of my steel which really kicks in during the second verse. Before that, it's mostly feedback and sound effects.

Yeah, it sounds like Friends of Dean Martinez and I'm not sure how I feel about sounding this close to someone else.

Friends of Dean Martinez = experimental instrumental band where the main instrument is steel guitar.

That's a pretty good sound for a 1 mic setup!

Actually, I think it was two mics with XY positioning. I only set up one mic but it sounds like there is a stereo field.

Chris, I remember your response, last time I posted a clip.

"buncha background sound effects around a questionable vocal vibe...it is what it is...what it isn't is being bought my me."

See the following for reference:

This is usually what people call "trolling". However, I'm cool with it. I post these to get feedback, whether it be good or bad. You probably wouldn't like Friends of Dean Martinez, after which I have modeled my playing (and now thinking I need to back off as I want my own sound).

For the record, I don't really claim to be a steel player. I play steel guitar but I find that it is an amazing textural and emotional instrument.....so I use it as such. I claim to be a flamenco guitarist, something that requires more technique and command of rhythm to play the basics than the average steeler possesses.. That point is not to bash steel guitar. I'm just saying that if i really want to bark up the traditional tree, I have good enough hands and am disciplined enough to learn it. Alas, there's only so much time in life and my next instrument will be the Turkish oud.

So, Chris, now that I've justified myself, tell me about yourself and what styles you like. From that, I will garner whether I have failed or we are simply dealing with apples and oranges.

i think it's pretty much apples and oranges , james. i'm 60 and hacked out a local honky tonk career for 38 years. somewhat losing the spark finally and never was disciplined enough to learn the fancy stuff i know i could if i weren't lazy that way. now i'm taking out my frustrations by trolling you, who at least is creating something you enjoy. nothing personal.

The steel was a bit back in the mix... a drawback of the one mic methop. Nonetheless, it was very textural.

I enjoyed it Cool
