Twitter about pedal steel

Post by Alan Pagliere »

FYI, for anyone on this forum who uses or is interested in Twitter, to help spread information about our favorite instrument.

I've been using Twitter for a few months now. I recently searched for "pedal steel" and found "tweets"from players and fans both about the instrument.

So, I created a hashtag: #pedalsteel

For those unfamiliar with hashtags, all tweets that include a particular hashtag can be retrieved all at once, so that people interested in the subject can seen what people are saying about it.

So, for all "twitterers" who are players or fans, who want to comment on the pedal steel, spread the word. That is, spread the hashtag: #pedalsteel

I guess I must be the odd man out, I really don't want to know what others are doing every minute of the day or night, nor do I wish them to know my business. I have a Cell phone which only has two numbers in it, one of which is my home number, it is never switched on. I can't use, or understand Textese, I have never sent a Text message in my life, and am unable to think of enough rubbish to use Instant Messaging.

I know I'm a big disapointment to the companies who run these things and need me to join in so they can make money.

These new things are mainly aimed at the younger set IMO.
If it isn't enough with Facebook there had to be something else like Twitter. Heck, there aren't enough hours in the day for me to maintain contact the way I wish in Facebook, on email, Skype or even here on the forum.

I guess it boils down to where you interest lies also. More power to you guys and gals who are able to keep up with the latest craze.

This section is called "Steel on the Web". The #pedalsteel tag on Twitter is appropriate.

For what it's worth, I've been tagging tweets to #pedalsteel, and I have a column set up in my TweetDeck preferences for it.

Most of Twitter doesn't interest me. If someone is tweeting many times every day, I won't follow them. I don't need that much detail. But #pedalsteel isn't very busy - right now I think that me and Alan are the only people tweeting to it, and we're not real prolific.

Actually, I'm seeing a lot more action in my FaceBook page than on Twitter.

A bit more info

Post by Alan Pagliere »

I was just trying to share information about the steel. Certainly didn't mean to start a war here.

Twitter is simply one more way of sharing information. And one that doesn't force anyone to participate, so I'm not sure where the anger comes from. It's "opt in" only, which is more than I can say for lots of ways of sharing information (spam, junk mail, warrantless wiretapping  ). Like most clubs, you don't have to join.

Of course there are folks who "tweet" too much, informing the world of things that are unimportant. They can be safely ignored. I only follow people I'm interested in and who have information I find useful, for example, new technical trends, trends that affect my job or interests, events that are happening locally that I'm interested in, etc.

BTW, Twitter is not directed at young people specifically. In fact by various polls, the average age of users is 31, higher than other social networking groups (see: http://www.pcworld.com/article/159524/w ... ensus.html and http://www.telegraph.co.uk/scienceandte ... ccess.html )

I do admit that the average Twitter user's age is quite a bit lower than mine.

Alan thanks for the info. I am always interested in new tech. stuff so i will give it a try. If we all said no to the new stuff there would be no forum. For me I don't knock it till I try it and have found a lot of things I enjoy. Maybe I will see you there

The only Twitter I know of is Twittering your fingers on the steel guitar.
