For some of us this music is the best ever and who am I to dispute that?
Here is a tune that some of you might know.For those that don't....it is George The Fretes.
With Rudy Wairata and the Kilima Hawaiians George dominated the Dutch Hawaiian scene for a long time.IMO there will never ever again going to be players like George the Fretes, Rudy Wairata and Coy Pereira.

Thanks for that Ron...George is one of my favorites. I listen to his playing on youtube often.
I know who Tuti Sedya is also, as well as other Indo singers.
I'm sure you know Pulau Ambon, which I believe is written (and played) by George.

I thought that it is something worth sharing on this wonderful web-site.
Yes I do know Pulau Ambon, one of the best songs he ever written.

These songs and this kind of music made me pick up the lapsteel at the age of 6 now 36years ago.
Rudy Wairata was a great one but he could not touch George when it came to arrangements and soulful playing.
A shame that all that is now lost forever but we still have his music.

Thanks Ron for the awesome website. I fully agree with your comments of George, Rudy and Coy. I happened to know them very well, since 1945 in Indonesia, The Netherlands and the USA. All three players have a different style. Rudy is the only one who has a masters degree in music. George was the king of the steel guitar in Asia and Europe.
He is also a champ on the regular guitar, sax, trumpet, keyboard etc. George has a golden ear and never used a tuner. I have played with George and his brothers many times here in California. George was my mentor and inspiration. It is unbelievable the sound he can get out of his 6 string frypan.
As you have said Ron, when you hear him playing, you like to pick up your steel and play along.
Rudy plays flawless. Coy is an all round player.
I really miss them.
BTW: all three steelers are from the island of Ambon
These islanders are well known for their musical abilities and voices. Terima kasih banjak Ron. |

When Pat and I Play at the Tong Tong festival and fair (Grand Pasar Malam) in the Hague next month we will be doing, by way of a tribute to Ambonese and Moluccan players, a couple of George De Fretes numbers. The Instrumental Valse Ampir Siang and the song Koleh Koleh. (It's an "angkat pantun")
Pat will be singing the Joyce aubrey Parts and I'll do the Bill Toma bits, as well as the solo that George did. Like This
Our playing schedule is :-
Basil & Patricia Henriques & the Waikiki Islanders
- Monday 25 May from 20.00h till 21.00h in the Bintang-Theatre
- Tuesday 26 May from 11.15h till 12.00h at the Tong-Tong-Stage
- Tuesday 26 May from 16.30h till 17.45h in De Bengkel. I'll be conducting an Hawaiian Guitar Workshop.
Bob Brozman is also appearing there and his schedule will be posted on his web site.

Baz....this is great.I am very thankful that you are keeping the Hawaiian scene alive.
Not only that but the fact that you are doing songs like these really means the world to me.
Is there by any chance a possibility that you can send me your copy of Ampir Siang(played by you)?
I wish I could be there but I am not able to make it but I will be there in spirit.
Please keep this Indo, Moluk and Hawaiian world kicking.

Aloha Basilh. Good to hear that you are playing at the Tong Tong festival. Some 30 musicians incl. me did a tribute to their 50th. anniversary of the Pasar Malam Besar last year. I am sure you will have a lot of fun. Good food and entertainment.
