What is the difference in roundwound and flatwound strings. I am talking abouttone, sustain,playability etc. Give me some opinions in reference to pedal steels.

With flat wounds or "Tape Wounds" as they use to call them, there is no tone or sustain that I have noticed. Easy on the fingers though!
Bad idea for steel!

| No "twang" with the flatwounds. The wound strings sound very "damp" and lack sustain. Of course, if you're into soft jazz stuff or "pop" music, they're great! A big "NO" for most country and rock sounds, though. |

| For steel guitar, try Frenchy's semi-flatwound. I have used them a long time and they sound great. Available in nickel or stainless. Jody. |

I used to put flatwounds on my Stringmaster. I liked the sound - not as "sizzly" as round wounds and much quieter when you slide.
I figured they'd come unwrapped from all the stretching from the pedal steel so I never thought to try them on it. Believe it or not I put flatwounds on my Tele and it still twangs but has a slightly fuller, punchy, more balanced sound that I really like. |
