Peter, a great contribution to the Forum. Curly played so much, yet we have so little to visualize his unique style. Were it not for Mike's efforts to preserve Curly's gift on DVD, we would a lot poorer to see Curls in action. It's a shame we don't have more of Curly's prime in the 60s and 70s when he was untouchable.
As for his placing of necks on all the brands he played, my '75 MSA Classic D-12 was also setup with them reversed as my preference was more toward the C6 playing. I remember the old TNN "Texas Connection" program, there was a great player with a D-12 ShoBud and he also prefered the neck reversal.

As a steel player here in Southern Alabama, not a gig goes by that someone does not ask me if I ever heard of Curly Chalker or Julian Tharp. Down here these guys are considered musical Gods. Well, actually thats applicable globally but because they were born and raised here it has extreme significance. I hear some great stories from time to time.

Curly and Julian
And now, down in south Alabama, there is another rising steel player-Gordon Dodson. Gordon plays a 14 string EXCEL with Julian's tuning. Gordon's neighbors, when he was growing up, were the Tharpes and Chalkers. Gordon is a hit at our Deep South Steel shows here on the MIssissippi coast and will be a feature on our June 20 show. And hopefully he will bring his eleven year old niece to play her steel also. She received a standing ovation at our last program. So proud of these players.
Glad to see Curly getting this well deserved attention. He was the best-ABOSOLUTLY!!
