I looked on the Harry Fox Agency site, and it has the writers listed 3 different times.

1. Leon McAuliffe
2. Ronnie Durban
3.W. Pearce, L. McAuliffe

Which is correct. I need to get a license to record it and need to make sure I have the correct composer.

Forget #3, It's listed as "New Panhandle Rag"[/b]

Herb Remington told me once that bob Wills had asked him to write an instrumenatl after Leon McAuliffe had come out with "Panhandle Rag" - Herb cam up with the famous "Boot Heel Drag". Cool

Kind Regards, Walter

I have some old sheet music for Panhandle Rag, and at the top it says "Music by Leon McAuliffe".

Leon definitely wrote it and it was a big Columbia instrumental for him and his band. The W. Pierce in some credits was picked up from the Webb Pierce vocal version where Webb added the words and had a vocal version.

At St. Louis, during the convention of either 83 or 86, I heard Leon talk about that. He said that he took the beginning of "Steel Guitar Rag" and turned it around, sorta backwards. Then he hummed it. Everyone who heard that, got a chuckle out of it..

As Danny stated, Leon took Steel Guitar Rag and turned it around to create Panhandle Rag...that's the story I've always heard anyways.

I would assume that "New Panhandle Rag" would have words to it. Just like "New San Antonio Rose" and "New Maiden's Prayer" etc., etc. That was the usual practice of Bob and his boys.

Back in the early 1950's, LEON scribed another; "Panhandle Waltz".....a rather long tune done in A6th, I think it was.

It managed to land on TinPan Alleys top 10 list, as I recall, for several weeks. All the local 'pop' stations were giving it multiple air time each day.

Never learned how well it sold but it got really great air time by today's standards.

If anyone has more info' on this tune, I'd enjoy learning about it.
