Allman Brothers Slide Style On Pedal Steel!

Post by John Rickard »

I've been in Jacksonville FL jammin' with friends & checkin' out the scene. Played a couple gigs with Mike Miller, lotsa fun! Here is a video of us playing Statesboro blues at Renni's Redneck Yacht Club. It was cool playing Allman Brothers & Skynyrd tunes in their old stompin' grounds (swamp behind the band). JR

Great work on those slide guitar riffs, John. There is so much we can do along those lines on steel. How 'bout sharing some of your secrets on getting that slide tone - amp, settings, stomp boxes, whatever?

Man that's some great playing. Also a great tone.
What are you using to get your slide sound?

Thanks for the comments guys. I'm out exploring more of Florida (St Augustine} today. I'll give you a rundown on my gear when I get to my computer later this evening. Thanks again! :D

By the way, I will be playing with the Mike Miller Band in Bloomington Georgia at the "Ottawa Farms Strawberry Festival" this Saturday from 11am to 6pm. Stop by if you're in the area! Headed back to Arizona afterwards.

I had a bunch of emails along with the replies on this post about my tone and the equipment I was using on this song. Well here it goes.

I'm using a rack system that consists of:
Match-bro.
Peavey Profex II for my steel preamp.
Peavey Tubefex for my Tele preamp.
Tube Works Mosvalve 500 for my poweramp.
The cabinet is an old 212 Tube Works angle cab.
I use the bottom speaker for steel and the top for guitar.
Goodrich Volume Pedal
Ibanez TS-9 Tube Screamer Pedal

Power amp is always at full volume.
The Profex is set at Bass-10 Mid-7 High-9
The Tube Screamer is set at Drive-10, Tone-2, the level should be adjusted so the volume is the same with the pedal on or off.
No reverb, delay or other effects, keep it dry!

These setings work with my rig, you will have to experiment to get similar tones out of other compoments or amps.

Overall, I would say this is a pretty simple sound to achieve whether you use a rack system or a classic amp. Fat tone (Lows cranked up, Mids up about 3/4 not to "honky" sounding, and highs around 8, the overdrive will elevate the highs so be careful.

Any decent distortion pedal should do the trick, just watch how much overdrive level you use and cut back the highs to get a smooth rounded off tone!

This is actually a throw together rig for my Florida trip. My road rig consists of the same rack gear except I use it just for steel. A single 12" speaker cab equipped with an EV. 1 Profex II preamp, A Boss DS-1 for my overdrive sounds and a Hughs & Kettner Rotosphere for Leslie speaker/Organ type tones.

I use a seperate Mesa Boogie rig for my standard guitar rig (Tele,Strat, Lester, Steel Gitr, etc)
