In October of 1960 after attending a Gretsch promo st the Saint Francis Hotel in SF, featuring Jimmy Webster, Chet Atkins and Jr. Husky, I and others, including, Norm Hamlet, Gene Breeden, Jerry Rowe and myself were invited to the club in Brisbane by Vance and we were treated to a solo show by Vance and he was brilliant.

David:

Thanks for posting that file at youtube. It saved me from having to scrounge around trying to find my copy of it and it forced me to figure out how to record it as it played in Windows Vista--an ordeal in itself.

The first time I heard that recording I thought it was Vance--the tone that your dad gets on the recording is nearly identical to what I always heard from that pink Sierra guitar that Vance played for so long. It's an unusual tone that I always attributed to Vance, but I guess at least some of it was due to the guitar, which I think your father built.

David, can you tell a little more about the pickup (or pickups) on your dad's guitar? I love the sound--almost like a Gretsch. Were there 2 pickups being played in that clip?
Thanks for posting it.

I was pretty certain they were his own pickups, i was just wondering if he used 2 pickups in parallel on the guitar. That's what it sounds like to me. Very unique--I love the tone.
