Yes, AVG 8.5 is genuine, if you download it from http://free.avg.com. Better yet, use the built in updater to get there from a previous version.
I personally chose to switch to Avira Free AntiVir after too many false positives and slowdowns from AVG free. AVG added bloat and drags down system resources on older computers, caused by the addition of the Search and LinkScanner security modules. As other security apps grow leaner, AVG grows fatter. They are now part of Intel. Really fat.
If you can afford to pay for an annual security program subscription and want one that is fast to respond, but light on resources, try Trend Micro Internet Security (or I.S. Pro) free for 30 days. It is updated every three hours in trial mode, to protect against the latest threats and variants, with old definitions moved into the "cloud."
