Great Job
Kenny how do you get that great tone!!!!!!

Derby SD10 2 Johnson Blue line amps Hilton Roland space echo BJS
Thanks guys!
Compared to Buck Reid's cut it is sloppy!!
As for tone, i don't really use much!
I use a Boss DD3 dealy and a Line 6 compressor.
I use very little while they are on.
The amp is a 1984 Session 500 with a 15' black widow.
E66 pick ups in the Derby!
That's it!
I was having trouble with string seperation and Mike Bagwell told me to turn everything off even reverb and slowly add a little at a time. That is the sound you here now! I was using too much!!
I'm a nobody so for you guys to ask is pretty cool.
Thanks and i only post these to bounce what i do off good players. Not looking for recognition so thanks again!!

I think your doing an excellent job Kenny. I have been playing around with some speed picking ideas for some time now...I don't play proffessionaly and I will never be that good anyway. I just play for the personal enjoyment and its a lot of fun trying different songs, fast and slow ones. You keep up the great work, your sounding fantastic.
Thanks John!
Yea, i get kicked around for playin everything fast but its fun for me!!
I love the slow ones to but i'll jump in on a fast tune in a minute!
I use to run the road from about 1979 through 2000 as a part time player. Sittin in and running with a band that opened for a good many major artist because we had alot of sound and i guess we did a good job as an opening act.
Anyways, thanks so much!!

Great Job
great job Kenny you have done very very well!!
this is a very hard tune to play
did you use a slow downer file to catch all the speed licks? ive been playing speed licks for 25 years and these are tough!!
I have the tab and been working on it
but the fast stuff passes by at the speed of light
just wondering

Actually no, i didn't slow it down because i have not got a program to do it with yet.
I will tell you that i talk with Buck Reid about this one and "Sour Dough" which are the two favorites on his CD "A Work In Progress"! He explained one section over the phone which is the very first lick of the first solo he played! Man, that one is very tough because you have to hammer with the bar in the F position, play the 1st string open, slide to the G# position, play 4th string with the 3rd string open, hit the 1st string open and slide back to the F position and finish the run decending and last, end up in the A position to continue the solo!
Ok, that about does it! What i did was take the solo in phrases. One piece at a time! Trust me, it sounds basic but the problem for me is to tie them all together in a clean fluid run and as you can tell that's where i say i'm "SLOPPY"!
I know this is more than anyone wants to know but for me there are alot of awesome steel players out there but very very few that is as intense as Buck is playing fast or really slow!!
Buck & Tommy White seem to be the two that speed the best to me!
I'll shut up but truly let me say that i have no players close to get opinions on what i do, so the SGF is pretty cool for me. Even though i get beat up every now and then, but that's ok to!
Thanks again guys and gals! I really appreciate being a memember!

bucks ala
yes I know about the first lick
you almost have to memorize it then play it out on the neck.....
and your right Buck is a awesome player!!
I love the mini movements he plays on the slow stuff its like a phrase within a phrase sorta
thing....you and I must think alike!
hey keep up the good work Kenny

Yep we must work'em the same way!
I wish i had something to slow one down but hopefully soon!
As for Buck Reid, he is at the top of the list for me and he doesn't get the recognition he desrves!!
My opion is he should be the one that all the producers should be using everywhere as is with Tommy White!
Yea, i'm pro Buck but the reason is he is such a great perosn. Last year in April my Daddy passed away and was my hero. He put me behind a steel at 9!
I mention to Buck that in a email that i used his rhythm track on "In The Garden" and made a clip for my Daddy and gave it to him the monday before he passed on friday. He cried everyday watching it.
Buck sent me a message to call him and took the time to help me know things would be ok! I thought my world was lost! At his level to take the time to call me was a gift! I hate to ramble but it was the single thing that helped the most!
On top of that he is in the top 5 in the world as a player to me and 1# for me personally!
Thanks so much for taking the time to holler at me
man!
Good people on the SGF!!!

Hi Kenny. Here is a link for a software recorder that cost only about $15.00. I bought it about 5 years ago and you can slow a song down or speed it up without throwing the key off or causing any disturbance with the tuning. It really comes in handy when you want to hear what is being done with a certain part of a song. http://www.dak.com/shop/details.cfm?item=131

Thanks Larry!
Ya know, in all the years i've played i never did any steel shows until the last Saluda, SC jam. I played there for the first time ever. Terry Crisp was there and man i was nervous doing my little 5 tunes!
I plan to make more if anybody will have me! Gonna play the next jam in Saluda i think in May. I want to go to the Atlanta show but not sure when it is.
I have played some very big shows over the years but being the center of attention puts you on edge but it was fun. Terry jammed with us almost to midnight!!
Anyways, i ramble some times so i'll shut up!!
Thanks again!

Yea, the getting lost thing happens some times!
The good thing is the awesome players on this forum can un-wined you when you get taggled up!
I just finished the lead in AJ's "You Don't Even Know My Name" that Paul Franklin did!!
That run is killer to pull off! For me the hard leads are when you have to hold the bar and hammer licks and finish in a very fast ending such as this lead.
My band does this tune and when the guitar player played Brent Mason's lead note for note i guess i had to learn Paul's note for note.
I don't have a tab on it but my version at least sounds just like he played. Probably not as he did by no means!
I'm still learning all the licks Buck Reid plays on "Alabama Jubilee" so hopefully i'll post it right the next time and clean without all the "SLOPPY SLURS" in it!!
Take care!
