XM-13 has been playing some tunes by Doug Sahm.
Quite the history to this musician. Sir Douglas Quintet and all... Passed away in 1999.
XM has been playing his tune "Can't go back to Austin, Anymore". The steeler really pulled out all the stops.
Anyone know who was pickin' the steel on that recording? It's really something to hear. |

You were hearing that song from the album "The Return Of Wayne Douglas." Even if you're not a fan of Doug, it's worth the price for Tommy's steel playing alone. His playing (and tone) on the Wayne Douglas CD is some of my favorite steel playing ever. He produced the record too and it has Bobby Flores on fiddles (!). I think forum member Pete Finney might be on some older Sahm recordings as I know he worked with Doug for a time.
There will be a Doug Sahm tribute CD coming out this March called "Keep Your Soul, A Tribute To Doug Sahm" on Vanguard records. I had the good fortune to contribute twin fiddles and some steel guitar on Delbert McClinton's version of Doug's song "Texas Me." I have not heard it, but the artist line up looks like it should be a nice tribute from a lot of Doug's old friends.

I absolutely agree that Tommy Detamore's playing and production on that album are incredible. There's an older version of the song too from the 80's which I think has Doug himself playing some non-pedal steel...
Unfortunately I didn't make it onto any of Doug's records; when I was in the band we played all kinds of music live, but he was kind of in a "West Side Horns" blues phase with the record company at the time. He went a pretty long time without recording much country stuff; it wasn't until he hooked up with Tommy that he finally made the really great country album that he had in him...

I've had that CD for a long time and it never gets old. Tommy has some great stories about working with Doug, and a couple of live videos w/Doug in the studio working. Maybe he'll see this and post a link to those videos again. Great stuff... Doug's passion really shows.
I'm pretty sure at least some of Doug's vocal tracks were just scratch tracks, as sadly, Doug passed during the making of this record. Tommy did a great job making that work. Hopefully, he'll chime in.

I don't really have much info on the tribute record but I was able to find this on Google:

When the old Soap Creel Saloon in Austin was on Lamar it seems like Delbert played there every two or three months from '79-'81 or so (until they closed down and moved it to Congress Street). Doug was usually always there to sit in with us. I've been a steel guitar "owner" for 30 years now but never a full time steel player (as you well know, Pete!) but I remember I took my fiddle and steel down there once and played them on a song or two. Doug of course gave me the whole low down on how he had started out as a steel player and from that point on we sort of connected on some level. I was playing in Wimberly with Lee Roy at some little club on what happened to be Doug's last birthday in '99 and he came out an celebrated with us. I think it was 12 days later that he passed away. It was a terrible shock. |

As far as the tribute album is concerned, I was honored to be a part of that as well. I recorded "Be Real" with Frieda and the Firedogs at Joe Gracey's studio. Here is a great picture taken on that magical day:
left to right: John Reid, Steve McDaniels, Marcia Ball, dumpy steel owner, Bobby Earl Smith, and the legendary Joe Gracey.
And Kimmie Rhodes made me probably the best chicken sandwich I have ever eaten....!

| Tommy, the whole tune is great, but you made some super neat notes towards the end of that tune, accompanying and following the words "that girl, she opened every door". I've never heard the steel sound like that. Awesome man, absolutely awesome. Thanks. |

Tommy -- The Return Of Wayne Douglas is one of my all-time favorites. The version of Dylan's "North Country Blues" is killer. Why wasn't it included on the CD? I'm glad the the version of Love Minus Zero made it. Just wonderin'
