Most used amp for steel is an old Randall Steelman 500 with a 15" JBL.
If doubling on lead guitar I use a MusicMan HD-212 One Fifty hybrid or a Peavey Stereo Chorus 400. If I really want the "Mooney" sound, the MusicMan is what I opt for.............JH in Va.

I believe in what Jeff Newman said, when he once played an old Fender 1000 on the stage of the ISGC in Stlouis,

(paraphrasing)

"Ya never could get any sound out of these old clunkers!"

Yes, many bought them. Yes I did too. Even Buddy owned one. In fact, he got sooooo frustrated with one, one night, that he rared back and kicked it right into the orchestra pit as the show ended.

But THE instant he and a man called "Shot" created a PSG called "Sho-Bud", that spelled the ultimate demise of what was one of THE best built PSG's of all time. In fact, it is one of few that had NO "cabinet drop". It only suffered from one malady:

IE: It never really had "That Nashville sound"; that became the measure of what most in country music wanted to hear.

And as good the SB was, the INSTANT Buddy divorced "ole Salty dog" Shot, and teamed up with a physics' professor by tha name ah "Ron Lashley Sr", MOST players in the PSG world, said, "What in the pluperfect heaven, is that sound? And what do I have to do to get it?"

'Tis true of late, that there has been a slight resurgence in interest in those "clunkers" of old, But nothing can come close to the nostalgia and love (and want) as those two classic and quintessential PSG's, as they are called:

1 "A Sho-Bud"

2. "An Emmons"


In years to come (since both Sho-Bud AND Emmons will no longer be built), there will be a myriad of other "new kids on the block". With all kinds of niceties and euphamistic "thing-a-mah-jigs", laced with all manner of esthetically appealing appendages, etcterrrra, etcererrra, etcererrrra.

But I predict that in the future, one of those two pedal steel guitars just may become the "Stradivarius" of the steel guitar world.

You say, "NO way!"?

Well, ya may be right, ya may be wrong.

But, on judgement day, when ALL "Truth" is revealed, we will find out. I have no doubt in me mind about that.
