Topic: Some advice about cats |

As most of us forumite cat owners know, cats can be a nuisance to pedal steels. We know that cats like to perch on top of things including these instruments. If anyone here has never owned a cat, but would like to have one as a pet, please keep these things in mind:
1. cat hair gets into the changers, so be prepared to clean the changers regularly if not protected, or better yet, simply keep the guitar covered or at least the changers covered when not in use.
2. Or you can train the cat, and better when it's a kitten to stay off the guitar by clapping your hands and saying PSSSTTT!! or spraying it with a water bottle. DON'T! I repeat, DON'T slap the cat. Cats don't understand that kind of discipline and they don't dig it even if you feel that it's justified. I own two female calicos, and I love them, but I think I'm going to keep the changers covered after discovering the amount of kitty hair in them. Use these precautions and I'm sure you will be able to maintain harmony between you and your feline friend.  |

Zoe Doesn't get on the steel and put her fur in the changer, but she doesn't want me to practice. Whenever I sit down at my steel she rubs up against my leg and cries till I pick her up and pet her from a minute. Then she gets enough and I go back to practicing for a few minutes and then she come back and demands more attention.

I have several cats. One of them knocked my violoncello off its stand and broke the neck. I glued it back together but it's not the same.
Over the years my cats have....
[1] Broken my 'cello.
[2] Peed onto banjo vellum, which absorbs it immediately and permanently.
[3] Peed onto guitars, which I only found out after it had started eating into the finish.
[4] Peed over my laptop, short-circuiting the whole thing.
[5] Peed on my pillow.
[6] Unravelled archive tapes.
[7] Sharpened their claws on speaker cones.
[8] Pooped on hand-made instruments.
[9] Knocked over a hot soldering iron.
[10] Knocked over my tea into music scores.
...and that's not mentioning the damage to furniture, etc.
I keep the door to my den closed and I have a double door so that if a cat makes it between my feet through the first door, the second door keeps her out while I grab her. If I get up at night to go to the toilet I take a flashlight and aim it at my feet to make sure I don't trip over them, or, worse still, tread in little gifts that they've left me.  |

| There is a wonderful device called the "Furminator" that has virtually eliminated shedding from our two cats. They get a daily brushing and a biweekly Furminating. Check it out. |

| After I got my PSG my cat "ambulance" got stuck between the pedal rods, he just started to howl and scrap until he freed himself, he is ok but my pedal rods where bent badly, no big deal I just bent them back. |

One question for the original poster: OK, so how do you keep them from sleeping on your head??

That's a nice cat, Steve. I can see why you don't like him on your head...he could smother you! Cats don't like certain scents, such as lemon, so maybe you could put a little lemon essential oil on your head. |

My cat prefers to re-tune my MSA when I'm not around. I like the E9 tuning and he likes C6.

My cat Dillweed likes to sit on top of my Nashville 112. He don't jump on my steel, though. He just likes my pac-a-seat. Tinkerbell will mark "Redgold Beauty's legs, but she don't jump on the steel. Sometimes when I'm playin' steel and Tinkerbell is in the same room, she'll lay on my bed and fall asleep and she never gets bothered by the sounds of the steel. Dillweed sits at my bedroom door and starts to meow because he wants out while I'm in the middle of playin' a good steel solo, but I tell him to wait til after the song finishes playin'. I love both my steel and my cats and I always make sure they're all taken care of. One night, I was gettin' ready for a show and my dad was tuning my steel and Dillweed was meowin' so loud that my dad couldn't hear the guitar-it was funny!

It's nice to see so many cat lovers, but this has gone a little off-topic. I'll refrain from posting pictures of my eight cats. The topic is about advice dealing with cats, which presumably means their interaction with steel guitars. and must be about their propensities to do things to instruments for which the instruments were not designed. 
My experience with cats is that if you have just one you can train him/her to respect your property, but if you have more than one it becomes a competition between them as to territory, and the steel guitarist is stuck in the middle of the battle. 
Right now, I won't let any animal in the same room as my instruments or recording equipment. |

Almost all Calicos are female. Weird, but true.
It takes two X chromosomes for a cat to be a calico. A male would have to possess two X and one Y chromosomes to be a calico cat. This can happen, but very rarely. According to a study at the College of Veterinary Medicine in Missouri, one out of 3,000 calico cats is male.
