I am using Yahoo. I am in the process of purchasing an item from a forumite, & sent a mail to him saying I would take the item, a few hours later he got an e-mail supposedly from my address, saying it was too much & I don't want it. I never sent the letter stating that, & I was sound asleep in bed when that letter was sent... Can anybody shed some light on how this is happening, & what my recourses are. Two weeks ago I had some mail in my inbox, & other folders & my contacts list in yahoo. When I went to yahoo, everything was gone, nada, no contacts, inbox empty, sent folder empty, trash folder empty, is there such a thing as space gremlins.????

Somebody has cracked your password at Yahoo, or used a spyware keylogger to steal your passwords and is able to logon to your Yahoo identity (and possibly any other sites you need a password and user name to enter). I recommend that you change your Yahoo password and scan your computer for keylogging Trojans, then remove them. If you don't have any decent anti spyware programs installed now, try out PC-cillin, which is free for 30 days, or the totally free Spybot Search and Destroy. Whichever program you choose it must be updated before scanning.

Thanks Wiz.. I've changed my Yahoo password, but my other sites I have different passwords, would they be stolen too, or just the Yahoo. I'm doing a scan right now with S&D..

Jolynyk;
The answer depends on how your Yahoo login was stolen. If the thief used a dictionary attack against all Yahoo accounts he would be able to crack all those with weak passwords that are actual words. Change your password to a non-common word and include numbers or accented characters. This will make a dictionary attack less likely to succeed.

However, if there is a keylogger on your computer all logins to every website you visit will be captured and sent home to the criminal behind that keylogger.

Let us know what, if any spyware is detected and removed by your ongoing security scan and which programs you are scanning with. I recommend a second scan with the free, online HouseCall scanner at Trend Micro.
