Watching some re-runs of Hee Haw on R.F.D., Buck Owens and the Buckaroos were on stage, and the band consisted of Don Rich,(Guitar) Doyle Holly, (Bass)Jerry Wiggins, (Drums)and ???? (redish hair) on the steel. Later on in the program, Faron Young was doing a song and he had a different Steel Player (dark Hair) who's string combinations reminded me of J. D. Manis.
I understand J.D.M.played for Buck at some point after Tom Brumley left, but I think this segment was filmed in 1969. I'm sure you steel pickers think I'm dumb for not recognizing the steel player, but I'm curious.

a friend told me he saw jay dee on there. the cool dark haired steel player with his hair combed back, playing stuff you wish you'd played.

| I read in a J.D. Maness interview that he and Buck Owens had little bit of a personality clash because Buck wanted him to learn all of Tom Brumley's licks and naturally, J.D. wanted to stick with his own style. Buck even gave J.D. a big stack of his albums to listen to, and they never got opened. |

Funny stuff, you know Jay Dee was only in a dozen episodes, Hee Haw was filmed long after 1970 when Jay Dee left, so you know it's gotta be a case of.. let's just show certain episodes over and over.
Jerry Brightman played on the show about three times longer than Jay Dee, if you do the math, seems like Jay Dee is on high rotation.
Don't know if Buck used temps in the gap between Jay Dee and Jerry, Jim shaw played some dobro.. and they had a banjo player starting in 1971.. dunno if they ever had a sit-in.. never even thought about it until now.
hmmmmm.
I prefer Buck's earlier show, more west coast guests and lotsa nudie suits, and a hellova lot less slick in the format.. (eg: on air conversations about things happening offstage.. awesome) |

J D flew into Minneapolis & joined Buck Owens on the road, on about March 12th 1968. Tom Brumley had quit Buck the night before in Denver.
I was at the Buck Owens concert in Minneapolis and spoke to J D after the concert. He told me he was very nervous playing for Buck for the first time.
J D didn't meet Buck until after the concert.

The steel player with Faron was Doug Jernigan. Fresh out of the U.S.Army.

Hi Roger, I think you might be a year out with your recollection.
Tom Brumley remained with the Buckaroos until early 1969, when he left to co-run ZB in Bakersfield. (Around Feb-69 I think)
Jay Dee and Doyle Holly have gone on record that Jay Dee joined the band in early '69. Plus Tom famously played with Buck at the Fillmore in late '68. |

Hey since we are talkin HeeHaw, does anyone know who might have played this fender on the show? Its currently for sale on ebay but has been since refinished in cream or blonde or whatever they call the original fender color.

Prolly if you took a realistic tally you'd find that J. Brightman appeared on more of the Owens albums and Hee Haw than any other player. Just guessing but it's a pretty good bet.
