He Fellas i am a pedal guy but i ran across this nifty little Carvin 8 Stringer today at the flee market and i picked it up for under $100.00 bucks and was wondering if anyone new anything about them.
its a blond color, basic fret markers, plastic button tuners, no SR # that i can Find Any where but it sounds pretty cool. oh yea it also has 3 legs that telescope up to a standing positon. they look factory. the leg sockets are stable and recessed in the wood on an angle. i dont have a camera handy but just looking for a little knowledge on this thing. anyone?

It's been a while (too long...) since I got a deal like that on a Carvin, Al. No matter what year it's from, you got a killer deal. I'm all over Carvins. I've had a few, and still have an old dbl. 6 that is awesome.

Is your's a standard clear finish maple body (?blond?), or MOTS? Does it have plastic bridge/nut, or cast aluminum? White or black PU cover? Black bakelite fretboard w/white markers?

The older models w/the cast parts, and multi necks, are the better sounders, but all Carvins are very worthy.

They're typified as the 'poor man's Bigsby' and never get the respect due them.

Play on, lucky man!

Don Thanks For That Site it showed what i was lookin for.
Ron yes it is the Clear finish maple.
it has the plastic bridge and nut and a black Pup cover. the fret board is black with very basic markers but i dont think its bakelight its some sort of plastic though. the decal says (Carvin) and under that reads (Covina Calif) now on that site that don pointed me to it says that that decal was was like 56-69. it kinda threw me that it might be that old. is it possible? with the plastic parts and all.some of my older Emmons guitars had plastic parts like the tone knob and such. i did note the tuners are Kluson Delux that have been cut to a four in line from a six in line and if im correct they quit makin them in the late 70's right? i only paid $75.00 for it and it was filthy so i just took it all apart and cleaned it up good. now im lookin to string it up. i can play C6 a bit and im wondering what might be a good string guage to put on for a 8 string C6 tuning any ideas.. any help would be appreciated. by the way it cleaned up well and the legs are like brand new.. it didnt have a case so i am looking for a case for it to if you have any ideas.. thanks for the help fellas

It's a Carvin, so it's priceless!
But probably around $500 tops.
The plastic parts ones are 1960s-'70ish
The earlier fretboard were Bakelite, and tended to warp.

The fretboard, if Bakelite, will be very brittle and will crack/break easily, so messing with that would be a scary thing.
Lucky you to have the opportunity to visit Tom.
He does have a nice Rick. A mutal freind of his whom is the reigning Bakelite King was visited by Tom once (of many times), and sad about the 'fact' that his B6 didn't have the infamous 'moan' until it was played by his friend and the moan came right out. Ask him about that some day, it'll probably be a fun topic to hear directly from him.

I had a Carvin 10 string pickup I hadn't used for years. I built a 10 string lap steel using it. They have killer tone. I've heard many Carvin instruments over the years. Never heard a bad one. You got a great deal! Smile
