I was thinking about trying a few Fender SF and BF heads. I've seen a few reasonably-priced examples locally, and thought it would be cool to get one or two and check them out. What would be a good all-purpose speaker cab for running, say, a BF Bassman or a SF Showman? Would a 2-12" be the most logical choice? I am mostly looking for 6-string tones, but will of course be running the steel through the higher-wattage heads. I know there is the issue of ohms, as well as other particulars to consider. Any advice would be appreciated, thanks. _________________ Jackson Steel Guitars

A 2x12 will give you typical 6-string tone. Choose your favorite 12" speakers - mine would be JBLs or Weber Californias. However, you will get better steel tone with a 1x15 (need something high powered, such as a Peavey Black Widow or neo), or two 15" cabs (again, my favorites are JBLs or Weber Californias). Stevie Ray Vaughn thought a 15 was good for 6-string also.
If you can't find a head, but find a nice combo, just split the chassis into a head cab, and put a board across the empty slot to make a nice 2x12 open-back cab with the combo speakers. |

these guys make good and very reasonably priced cabs and have good prices on a variety of speakers as well. excellent customer service.

I own three of the low cost models. 2 4x12's and a 2x12. I run the 2x12 as an extension for a musicman (which some say are somehwat similar to fenders) 100 watt 2x10 combo and use that for steel at home.
avatar wont make a single 15. i asked em...no go.
I'm sure those thd cabs are VERY nice. I like their gear alot, kinda pricey tho. |

I own a 68 large bandmaster cabinet, a 67 small bandmaster cabinet, and a 63 2-15 showman cabinet.
All sound good, but the small 2-12 is a lot easier on the back, and less bulky to move around. With 2-12 8ohm speakers it is fairly easy to change from a 4ohm load to an 8ohm load depending on the head you choose.

Don't forget you can get a pretty cool six string tone out of a 15", either. Worked for Stevie Ray, among others, and not just jazzbos, either.

Chris I have and old bandmaster/bassman 2x12 cab with jensen neos that I sometimes use with my showman head.
I'm never been a closed back cab guy but was plesantly surprised by this particlular combination.Works very well for steel(very focused and clean) and works very well for guitar as long as your not looking for an early breakup.I got some repo clips to hold the head and the tilt-back legs for the cab.Very retro cool but bulky and heavy even with the neos- not a rig I would want to shelp on a regular basis. |
