Bakersfield Sound Fans: I just checked the Crystal Palace site and the Buck Owens Ranch Shows videos are listed again!!

if you are a "Carnegie Hall" album fan this is as close as you can get to seeing that performance: the first show on each tape was filmed about a week before that famous recording in March 1966...contains many of the same arrangements, and the band is so tight they squeak....Fender Telecasters, Fender Bass, Fender Amps, and ZB Custom pedal steel guitar..

Don Rich, Tom Brumley, Doyle Holly, Willie Cantu, Kay Adams, Bob Morris, Fay Hardin, Tommy Collins, Wynn Stewart, Jerry Wiggins...,more much more
http://buckowens.com/ranchshow.html

fair warning: there is also some early 70's material on these tapes with The Hagar Twins...

Funny thing - I had a 30 minute visit with Buck's ranch foreman today! Yep, Bud Mathis, here in OKC where those shows were taped.

We talked a lot about the shows. Besides the Buck Owens shows, Bud and his brother Don had "Country Social", a weekly live music show that was sponsored by their own furniture store. Each week they featured a "star", and routinely had people like George Jones, Connie Smith, Ray Price, Merle Haggard, and even Bob Wills.

He related a story about how they would sometimes tape-over a show to save the $50 bucks for the video tape. He recalled how over the years, they realized that taping over the show that Patsy Cline appeared on was a mistake!

I was a pre-teen when those shows were done, and I was glued to the television every Friday night. Without trying to make Bud feel old, I let him know he was one of my earliest influences in playing music.

My dad and I used to watch all of those shows back in the 60s. I would put them on reel to reel tape-long before video was available. I have many fond memories of watching those shows with my dad and will look forward to watching them again now !
BAck in those days-we could watch country music shows back to back on Saturdays from 2 in the afternoon until 10 at night and then wathc the ET show on Sundays. Great time for watching all kinds of steel guitar kings.

if you haven't bought all 3 of these videos, then what are you waiting for?!!

Tom&Don and the rest of the Buckaroos are featured backing everyone from Buck to Wynn Stewart, Tommy Collins, Dick Curless and Kay Adams. Also a great performance by the "5th Buckaroo" Bob Morris, author of "Buckaroo" and many other Buck tunes.

There's instrumentals too! ...and the outfits are outrageous. Man, those guys were cool.

Randy- a quick check on BMI website confirms it's the same Bob Morris; it would seem likely just from the date and location. He was very active in the Bakersfield sound, and was as said above essentially the "5th Buckaroo", playing fiddle and guitars and doing other "utility" work on Buck's albums- and he WROTE Buckaroo!
bmi.com do a search on title "Helpless"- Bob's listing is the second after Neil Young!

Does any of the three videos have Dick Curless singing Buckaroo? Not many people knew that there were words to the song!

no but Curless is on one of the shows...I think he does "The Baron" about WWI aviators.. sounds like C&W response to "Snoopy versus the Red Baron"
there is a listing of tunes on each tape on the Buck website, but not who performs each tune

so, what ARE the lyrics to "Buckaroo"? are they as cool as MerleTravis' "SGR"?

Buck introduces Curless and says that he usually does one of his "own" songs, but he'd like for him to do one of someone else's that he has on an album. Curless says "This is about a little guy, called Buckaroo."

Inst. kick - 1-4-1-5-1-4-1-5-1/4/5/1/4/5

There's a little boy in town
Who wears a cowboy suit around
Everybody calls him Buckaroo
Sixguns and fancy chaps
White hat and boots to match
He's a good guy, he's a Buckaroo

Goes to the V

He's a hero of all the girls
He sets their little hearts awhirl
When he smiles at them, he thrills
them through and through
Though he's just a little boy,
He's mom & daddy's joy
He's a hero, he's a Buckaroo

Short inst (1-4-1-5-1/4/5,1/4/1)
Back to the V

Repeats the above, then out

Curless is playing his Martin in the C position, but the band is tuned to their normal half-step flat, playing in the D position. That means Curless is tuned a half-step sharp! That's about as funky as the words to the song! The date on this show was March 15, 1966.

Wow! Do I have some fond memories of watching that old show; I used to catch it on one of the Washington television stations (WTOP channel 9); it came on every Saturday night at nine thirty p.m. I'd say the year was somewhere around 1967..and I do remember Dick Curlus singing "Buckaroo." However (and maybe my memory is playing tricks on me) but the way I remember it, Dick sang it in the key of "B"..playing in the "c" position with tha band doing the same. Like I say..my memory may be playing tricks on me. BTW wonder why the buckaroos tuned down (not that I'm knocking it..whatever works. Just always wondered about it. Anyway I hope at some point in time to have at least one of those videos!

Dave,

I would also like to ad in addtion to the other comments on Bob Morris, he was also one heck of a producer...He did most of Susan's cuts, among others on Capital, and had a lot of great ideas in the studio...I am proud to say we were great friends during my time there in Bakersfield...
