Steel King

I received a new Steel King today. Sounds good but would like some of you Steel King users to post your EQ setting's.
Only thing I really don't like, it doesn't have the bottom end I expected. C6th side doesn't have the fullness like a Vegas or Evans. Like I said, I only got it today. I feel sure it will get better.

Here are the settings I'm using with my pre-RP 12-string Mullen, which has a Lawrence 712 humbucking pickup:

EQ Tilt: 12:00 o'clock
Treble: 12:00 o'clock
Mid Level: 10:00 o'clock
Mid Freq: 500 (not 5:00 o'clock)
Bass: 4:00 o'clock

I had a FSK for 3 years and my typical settings for my Williams with BL710's was.

EQ Tilt: 10:00 o'clock
Treble: 8:00 o'clock
Mid Level: 10:00 o'clock
Mid Freq: 500
Bass: 11:00 o'clock
Reverb: 10:00 o'clock

Really?!? Geez...that's the thing I LOVE about the Steel King...the bottom end. I had a Nashville 400, Nashville 1000 and currently have a Session 400....none of them have the bass projection that my Steel King has. I have to turn the Session 400's bass to 10 just to get a sound out of it.

I owned a steel king for about 2 months. I did not like it either because it had a real "thin" sound. I dont want to discourage you but I traded mine because I could never find the "sweet spot".

I've never had a problem dialing in a great sound with my Fender Steel King. I can get it to sound very similar to my old 1985 Evans FET-500.

I don't get it. I have had a FSK for over 2 years now and play (3) different guitars with 3 different pickups thru it and it is the best sounding amp I own. Guitars are Emmons SKH LeGrande D10 w/BL705s, Sho-Bud Super Pro stock p/ups, Derby D10 with GL Tommy White pups and all sound great with EQ straight up... might shade the Tilt +/- a bit from one to another guitar that's all. Other amps I own for comparison are WEBB, Evans, (2) mod'd NV400s, and Fender Blues Deluxe with 15" JBL. I don't understand not getting enough bass. I would suggest finding someone else with a FSK and compare them.

Hi Guys, I am new to official membership in the Forum, but have been an un-official fan for several years.it is the best in my book.I have had a Fender Steel King for about eight months and a Lemay Modified Peavey session 400 Ltd for several years. After eight months I find that the Peavey still has it over the Fender in Bass response and overall clean sound with my Emmons .

Im with that I tried one out and found the fender was to thin for me,but hey Im not a traditionalist either.

Let me add my vote for the Steel King. Yes, it is bright, (especially with the single coil pickups on my Zumsteel) but it is articulate in the bass! I have my studio setup A/B with a Steel King and a Peavey Nashville 1000. I play alot of blues on a U-12 and the bottom strings are mush with the Peavey...(I also have a Peavey 112 for my really lazy days and it can't handle the bass either.)

THe Steel King sounds best in the band environment because it projects and cuts through...I'm sure solo practice sessions will sound too harsh to players who are used to that smooth, oozing sort of C6 sound of the past...

I found the steel king very thin as well. I put a peavey black widow in it and it thickened and warmed up the tone A LOT. It sounds a lot like a peavey vegas I once played through. Its a Completely different amp now.

I have a 1501-4 sitting here just incase I don't like the Fender speaker.
I want to give it a good workout first. Some of the guys on the Forum say a speaker needs some time for break in. I have lots of amps so I will work with it.
I do, however want to try some EQ settings from you players !!

I want to try a BW in mine. I find with the stock speaker it has a crispy high end that I don't care for and can't get rid of without sacrificing treble I do want. I wish Fender had seen fit to include a Presence control! Rolling back the Treble and/or EQ Tilt controls tends to cut too far down into the frequency spectrum.

Best tone I found with a FSK is with a 1501 speaker. The original speakers never did sound good to me. I found on all 4 of my FSK's over the past 5 years that the 1501 speaker brought out the lows, especially whenever I played a C6th or U-12 set up. I only use 112's now, mainly for the lightweight.

This Steel King is coming around. I might cut back
to two amps. Steel King and Evans.
The Evans is ,hands down, the best but the Steel King
is not far behind.
I have always favored the Vegas as a second amp >

This is what I have come up with after about 4 hrs.
of just guitar and amp. No efx.
Gain 10:00
Tilt 12:00
Treble 10:00
Mid Level 8:00
Mid Freq. 2:00
Bass 2:00
Rev. 11:00
Master 3:00
My guitar is a HWP Mullen with stock single coil PU.
Good string separation and very clean up and down the scale.
If I'm off in left field let me know. I really like the fact that the QE is not maxed out at any adjustment point. With a Peavey you run the bass wide open and still looking for more. I have lots of room for adjustment.

I couldn't find a tone I liked with my steel king after working with it for a while. Also, at least in my case, it was not a particularly reliable amp. I went back to a stock Nash 400 for my local work horse amp needs.
If I am concerned with tone I go with my old Fender Deluxe or Showman. The reissue Fenders highs don't ring even to my ear.

According to Mike Smith, the amp was developed to sound like his Evans tube settings with everything at 12 o'clock.

My Steel King amp hasn't broken down yet.
I tend to set all the tone controls in the middle, reverb and master on zero, using only the efx send or XLR out to the computer. It is my favorite sold state preamp, and sounds good running the old fashioned way from guitar to passive volume pedal to Fender amp.

I have two Peavey amps left and two Evans amps and my favorite amp is the Steel King. Unfortunately the Steel King belongs to a friend of mine. It's just a loaner, but I do love that amp.

I Bought Dick Woods Amp and Put a JBL E130 8 ohlm In It and It sounds Great With My 66 PP And 76 PP , Rick Price Gave Me His Settings And It Sounds Even Better, EQ Tilt 12.00 O Clock,Mid Level 9.00 Oclock,Mid Frequency 3.00 Oclock, I Put Treble 12.00 Oclock And Bass 3 oclock Try It And see If You Like It. I just looked in the back of my Steel King and it has a JBL K130 in it. What's going on here?
I thought they had Eminence speakers !!
