I am looking for an inexpensive 2 or 3 neck non-pedal steel to set up with slide guitar tunings. Will be played with distortion most likely. Anyone familiar with these? The price tends to make me believe they are not very good.

I am actually looking for a reasonable National or something similar, 6 or 8 string necks.

Virtually unusable because of a few things, mainly the scale length 20.75" Shorter than short..

The volume and tone controls are not placed optimally and the "adjustable bridges ?" are not only unnecessary but obviously make the string HEIGHT lacking somewhat.

Although the pickups are too far from the bridge to get a "Classic" Lap steel sound, they ARE placed correctly for the style you refer to..

Nice to hang on the wall as a talking point..or maybe even an "Aiming" point !! IMHO

..but you can improve them. See this thread.

You can't do much about the short scale length, but the change to 8 strings and the GeorgeL pickups totally transforms the instrument.

See if you can find one of these D6 Supros, this one has a BIN at $595, item #320285623982

There's another one with a horrible paint job priced at $439, item #250282910018. Perhaps you could refinish it, the price is right...

Those double neck lap steels on eBay are exactly as Basil described them. I think the extra short scale length is my biggest problem with them.
What's your definition of "inexpensive", Richard? What price range are we talking about?

I think I would go as high as $600. I'm basically just looking for a guitar that I can use as a slide guitar instead of turning my Tele into a slide guitar which is my current intention. I don't play regular guitar well (my left fingers just won't cooperate) and raising the strings on the Tele a bit wouldn't cause me any problems. I would feel more comfy standing at a lap on a stand than strapped to a regular 6 string. I was just thinking of a multi-neck lap steel as slide players use different tunings (imagine the nerve of them guys using different tunings. Whoever heard of doing something like that? Very Happy ). Don't want to invest big bucks into a multineck like a Fender or the real pricey ones you see. It may only be used once or twice a night. I have no interest in having one as a regular lap steel for learning non-pedal style stuff. Like I said, this will be run through a Vox Valvetronix Tonelab LE unit for amp and effect emulation and be distorted most of the time.

I agree that the ebay guitar is not a good choice.

I was looking at that Supro. Is it a good guitar? There was also a Gretsch double neck on Ebay, but I thought $700 was too much for it. I made a lower offer but he rejected it. I saw an identical guitar in a pawn shop in Reno once and they only wanted $400 and it was in better shape than the one on Ebay.

If you are mainly playing dirty / gritty / distorted stuff, those string through pickups on the Supros really nail that tone.

David Lindley used one of those D6 Supros as his main steel in El Rayo-X. Check this live clip of Mercury Blues and you'll get an idea of how good these can sound when overdriven:

Though I'm not 100% sure about this, those Supro D-6 steels always look like the outside neck is on the same level as the inside one, instead of being a bit higher for playability. Something to consider. Were these instruments "tiered" or not?

Steiner, what what would you think his tuning is Open E or G?

I'm pretty sure that everything he played with Jackson Browne and El Rayo-X was in the Open-E "shape", but sometimes tuned as high as G. Sounds like he's in F on this video.
