Sound samples here

IMO - The tone isn't very good, the playing sounds very stiff, vibrato not so good, the bend timing sounds particularly bad. Some of the phrases sound somewhat realistic, but I wonder how much tweaking and programming it took to get these sound clips put together.
Reminds me very much of the string section soft synths out there, I have wanted to buy one of those and tried multiple demos. However, for those, like this pedal steel one, even if you get the tone close, the magic is in the expressive devices available. The string soft synths have portamento and vibrato of course, and if you work your *ss off programming you can get something that sounds mediocre, even using continous controllers real time and/or editing recorded continous controller tracks.
Reading the info page, you can see they included all the right expressive devices, and understand the instrument, and obviously this is a huge programming undertaking but...
Every pedal steel player I know here in St. Louis could walk into a studio and lay down something better than those sound clips (except for the banjo one) in less time than it took to make those clips on a keyboard using this software I would bet.
I noticed forumite Chris LeDrew in the credits of the manual, perhaps he will chime in, and hopefully he made a nice paycheck on this. _________________ Scott Swartz

This was put together by a guy from my city, who called me about two years ago and asked a bunch of questions about pedal steel. He wanted to use my equipment to record the sound samples, but I was too busy gig-wise to rent it. So a steel player friend rented his Emmons Legrande II and Webb amp to him. The guy behind these samples is not a steel player. He just compiled a big load of sound samples by hitting strings and bending notes, I believe, and put them together into some kind of program. I haven't looked hard enough at this to figure out exactly what it is. I tend to avoid anything that is not real, when it comes to music.
So my guess is that he gave me credit for filling him in on some pedal steel info, because I certainly didn't play anything on it. He emailed me a while back with a link, and said I could have a free copy of this thing. I didn't bother to reply. I try not to be negative about these things, but they do give me a bit of a sour taste. _________________ Jackson Steel Guitars

I am not opposed to virtual instruments, as I said I was/am interested one for strings, and I have a very realistic piano VI called Ivory and there are good ones for Hammond B3 also. Those are not perfect but quite workable in a mix, maybe get 90% of the sound, where this steel VI I would say gets 30% of the sound.
Although I am sure a piano player would probably say Ivory gets 30% of a real piano sound LOL _________________ Scott Swartz

Quality issues aside, these things are putting musicians out of work.
I also hate to be negative, but I don't see this as a good thing. _________________ Please visit my web site and Soundcloud page and listen to the music posted there.
