HAWKSHAW HAWKINS 1950s

Post by Roger Shackelton »

Here is a Hawkshaw Hawkins performance from the 1950s Ganoway films. The picture is B/W(??) and very fuzzy.???

Does anyone recognize the hot steel player on a Quad Fender Steel Guitar?

Who is the lead guitar player?

The steeler is Jack 'Curly' Evins who played off and on for Ray Price in the 50's. He is the steeler on Ray's recording of 'Invitation to the Blues'. This clip of Hawkshaw has him using Ray's band.

Here is another link showing the same band..the fiddlers are Dale Potter and Tommy Jackson, Jack Evins on steel, and perhaps Pete Wade on guitar.

The link below is a better view of Jack Evins and Tommy Jackson. Notice Roger Miller singing harmony with Ray as he did on Ray's original recording of Roger's song, "Invitation to the Blues".

Below is a link to Roger singing the song himself with Larry Sasser on steel. If anyone knows the fiddle player, I would sure like to know who it is.

Ben, Isn't that Buddy Emmons sitting at his Bigsby just at the 2.00 minute count ?? He isn't playing but that look is almost unmisdtakable. Wonder what kind of mechanism he had on the Fender Quad... the sound is too precise to be a coat hangar rig !!

Hi Paul:

It certainly is Buddy. At that time he was with Jimmy Dickens who obviously was on the same show. Incidentally, the girl in purple at the bottom right of the video is singer, June Webb, who at one time was part of the Roy Acuff Show.

I asked Buddy about this video some years ago and he said that he was with Jimmy Dickens at the time.

I don't know what Jack Evins had in support of his pedal(s) but it sure sounds right on the money.

Regards,

Ben
