June 10, 2008

Microsoft is planning seven security bulletins for its Patch Tuesday this month, today, June 10, 2008.

Three of the bulletins are deemed critical by Microsoft, and cover Bluetooth, Internet Explorer, and DirectX. The Internet Explorer bulletin is expected to be cumulative and may hopefully include some fixes for the Safari for Windows vulnerability I mentioned last week.

Three of the bulletins are termed important, and cover the networking items WINS, Active Directory, and PGM. One of the bulletins is considered moderate and covers kill bits, which when set prevent that particular ActiveX application from installing, or running if already installed.

If you have Automatic Updates turned on and set to check during the day or night, your updates will happen sometime on the 10th, or 11th.

Because Apple is either incapable of fixing Safari themselves, or don't care to, and the exploit does involve a blended threat that includes Internet Exploder. They have to patch the IE hole anyway.

None of this week's patches fixed the blended threat vulnerability in Safari and Internet Explorer. However, one interesting patch disables an ActiveX control used by wireless Logitech devices. The flawed ActiveX control is included with the Logitech Desktop Manager, update notification software bundled with Logitech's hardware, including keyboards, mice and Web cams designed for Windows. A patched version of the ActiveX control is available from Logitech in an update on its website.
