Yessssssir! That's some great stuff. I like the way Buddy starts his solo with the "Surrey With The Fringe" quote, and then later after the piano solo ends, he comes in with another quote from the tune "My Guy". He looks like he's having a blast up there. Thanks for posting this Bill.
BUDDY EMMONS has never ceased to amaze me with his talent.
I can still recall my first convention at the Holiday Inn in 1974.(3rd National Steel Guitar Convention) Buddy demonstrated how he recorded
"Witches Brew." I believe Buddy said John Hughey had the idea of taking a microphone into the bathroom and flushing the toilet to end the recording.
WOW, WOW, WOW. Thank you for the rest of the world that you let us see this permofming of this song. What to say,,,,,,,,,, He was at Jeffran College 7 of september 1979, he was NOT a student there at the time. How many of you was there that evning?

One of things I dig about Big E is that he always quotes lines from other tunes in his solos like Mike noted. You can tell he listens to all types of music.
THANK YOU, Shef, for that reply. I've been wondering what that quote was from. ("Surrey with the fringe on top").
Now I know.
I've heard several jazz players quote the same line while soloing.
First place I heard it quoted was by Emmons. Live at ISGC '77. At the begginning of E's second chorus on "Preacher". (He starts the first chorus with the Martino monster lick). What a solo!!!
Anyway, thanks again, Shef.

For anyone (like me) not familiar with the tune, "Surrey with the fringe on top", here is a nice version by Beverly Kenney and Johnny Smith.
I can definitely hear "my guy", since Shef mentioned it. I didn't catch it myself though. But I did think the first two bars of the quote sounded a little like "Farmers Market" by Wardell Gray (lyrics by Annie Ross).

Farmer's market starts on the tonic note though, and "my guy" on the dominant, so it isn't the same.
In reply to BOSSE ENGZEL: Yes, I was there at Jeff's in Sept. of 1979. I was in my prime then and Jeff asked me to play following Buddy's killer performance. I told Jeff,"You've got to be out of your mind! Nobody could follow a performance like that!" I still don't regret that decision.
