My dad had a D8 concorde lap steel in the 60s made by a man called Cyril Proctor who I think lived in Leeds yorkshire.
This guitar had a lovely tone played through a fender twin reverb.
He sold it sometime during the late 70s but found it in the hands of Jeff Betsworth ( from lemon grass )several years ago, unfortunately it had not been looked after lovingly shall we say .
Dad bought it off Jeff and tried to resurect it but it didnt sound the same and resold it the same year to a guy in glasgow. Still a nice steel but it had lost that warm Hawaiian tone.

Can anyone tell me anything about Mr Proctor , how many players had one of his instruments ? Are they still to be found .

In the mid-sixties when I was about fourteen, my Dad and I built a six-string lap steel, roughly based on the Hofner Artiste (?) - basically just a plank with a pickup - no attempt at fancy body shaping. All the parts except the wood came from Cyril Proctor of Leeds, including the hand-wound pickup. This was before there were any replacement pickups available. In this day and age, when everyone puts new pickups into their guitars, that's hard to believe. I sold the guitar on - it may be still out there somewhere. A couple of years ago, I bought a hand-built 8-string from Henry Wyseaki, who I believe may have worked with Cyril years ago...
