Clyde Mattocks/Country Gentlemen LP-The 60`-70`s.

Hello.
I have just listened to a great album that I found,an old LP from the &0`s-70`s I assume, called "Country Gentlemen". Not the Blugrass band with the same name.Record label is Casar out of Greensboro,N.C.
Steel is exellent played by Clyde Mattlock.In fact,the whole band was great.One side instrumental,the other side vocals.
Anyone else that got this LP,or can support some info on Clyde such as.still active,forum member?? Always nice to find out more about good players I barely have,or not heard of before.
PS-The record I found was in bad shape,so if you got a nice copy you don`t care to keep,I am interested in buying it!

Egil - Clyde is a fellow Forumite and is living in or near Wilson NC USA. He plays several instruments very well and is most definitely a fine steel picker. You should be able to contact him here from the Forum. Yes, he does play a fine steel. Worked a few jams with him while living in NC. Also check out Joe Turner from SC USA.

Clyde just put a new great Cd out recently titled
"Over my shoulder." Its great. Someone said one time that Clyde Mattocks has forgotton more about the steel guitar that most people will ever know. Sorry but I called Clyde first and he had one additional copy and he is giving it to me. I can't wait to get it and listen to it. I started playing steel rather late(while in college). Clyde taught me my first lick. He is and always has been one of the very best musician I know, in NC or Nashville. Clyde is a pro with steel, guitar, banjo and dobro and I mean a pro with them all. In addition to that he is one of the nicest people, musician or otherwise, anywhere. I consider it a privilage to be a friend of his. Everytime I go see him play I learn something. There are a lot of steel players in eastern NC that would not be playing without Clyde. He is a credit to music and the world.

I would just like to echo all the great things
that have been said about this extaordinary man.
I live about 16 miles from Clyde and have been lucky
enough to call him my friend for many years.He is one
of the classiest,most unselfish guys I have ever
known,not to mention the finest all around musician
I've ever seen.He has always been the standard by
which we,his peers,have measured our successes and
failures as steel players here in eastern N.C.He has
done much through the years to promote and preserve
traditional Country and Bluegrass music.So get his
Steel Guitar CD or his Dobro CD.Hear a true Pro
at work.You won't regret it!

Yep,i'm another NC guy(now in Myrtle Beach) that can say,pretty much without a doubt that if it were'nt for Clyde,i probably wouldnt be playin steel today.Thank you Clyde...you are one in a million....no,make that one in....well damn Clyde,i guess you're just one of a kind ! again,thanks for evrything ! Cldye is a top of the line musican every time I hear him his playing is amazing great dobro banjo & lead guitar and he plays that steel guitar in tune he also has helped alot of young players get started My hats off to Cldye

Clyde is the kind of guy "who never met a stranger" it seems and he is a great source for steel guitar mechanical things and practical knowledge about the instrument.

I might be wrong, and Clyde if you read this please set me straight, but he also built "Cherokee" steel guitars and was/is close with Leonard Stadler (Marlen) and Ron Lashley Sr and Jr. of Emmons. I'm sure there are others too.

He is also gracious and kind enough to answer some emails concerning questions I have asked him.

Oh yeah, he can play the horn (steel) just fine too!! WB

Well, you know they say if you can just manage to live long enough, people will give you way more credit than you deserve. I am blessed with a lot of picker friends who say nice things. Walter, for the record, Claro Daughety and I built Cherokee steels until his health declined. He passed away in the early 90's and I still miss him. Also Leonard Stadler was a good and helpful friend and the absolute definition of a gentleman. I visited with him frequently. Although I knew Ron Lashley, I did not see him as often. He was a very smart person and I now have and play a couple of Emmons guitars. I still have two Cherokees.

In 1970, I had this wild idea I wanted to learn to play Steel guitar. The man at the music store, John Wall, said he would sell me a steel guitar, but I needed to talk to Clyde Mattocks. He could start me out on the right track. Man, was he right! I bought a single neck Cherokee and two years traded it back for a D10. I owe all the good licks to Clyde. I'll take the blame for the bad ones. I have really had some good times and made some good friends thanks to Clyde. He is truly a candidate for the Steel Guitar Hall of Fame!
