I'm glad to see ol' Carolina Charlie and "Hopalong" Joe Hoppel won Pioneer Awards over the years; I'm just sad to see Pop didn't get a mention of any kind. There wouldn't have been a Charlie or Joe if Pop hadn't hired them eons ago... ask around Tidewater, and see if folks still remember "Sheriff" Tex Davis... I'll bet they do.

Mikey D, I wasn't in Va. at the time your dad was active but I've heard quite a bit about him. They say he was the mainstay at WCMS for a good while and very active in local entertainment. WCMS isn't around any more and Charlie's deceased. Maybe we can get some info from Joe H. about your father as he's really a pioneer in every sense of the word in this area. Do you have a picture or two you might be able to email to me and a little history on him. I know that he was listed as co-writer on some of Gene Vincent's hits. I'll also check with my bass player (Garland Abbott III) His father used to have a band around here (Garland Abbott & the Tidewater Playboys) who did a lot of TV and radio in the early days. I remember Garland telling me once about your dad riding a horse to some events!.......Thanks, Jerry in Va.
