“SAN ANTONIO ROSE” by Lloyd Green - Live, stunning
Hi all,
I should have first listened to Lloyd Green’s version before attempting to do my guitar version. I just found it today on Youtube.
Simply stunning.

Is Lloyd Green still alive ?. I tried to look on the net and I found confusing statements.
What a Steel hero !.
Regards,
Abel

Thank you very much Walter,
It's funny, I don't even know him, but your good news made my day as there are too many of those great steel players that are gone, sadly.
I' ll certainly check the Lloyd tribute website more than once.
I am headed to a Surf music stomp at Hermosa Beach,
8 hours of twang and maybe a steel player.
Blessings,
Abel

What great learning/teaching videos.............
Watching those fabulous Lloyd Green videos makes it so SIMPLE to recognize PROPER BAR technique. Notice how he's got the bar back on the 5/6 strings for the majority of his playing, only to then move it forward for another phrase and then back again to the lower strings for playing in that rehlm. NONE of that 10-12 string, full bar placement for the top pro's. That bar should be moving all the time with the point/tip of the bar going on the strings being picked 'at the time'. No lifting of the bar from the strings; no staccoto sounds from his playing, not even on San Antonio Rose.
One thing about Lloyd that REALLY IMPRESSES me is his facial expressions. He looks down to earth and like a real human being, not some frozen, plastic-like zombie with that Hollywood smile.
I've never been able to play a single phrase that Lloyd plays, that sounds even remotely like Lloyd.
He captivates my imagination and garners all of my respect. I'm so thrilled to have had the opportunity to get to HEAR him and see him on You Tube.

Lloyd Green, The Great

Ray and Mike; I also take notice of the fine way the camera was watching both of Lloyd's hands so diligentally. He holds his picking hand so elequentally; Can either of you tell us, is he using three finger picks? Some fine playing on his Sho-Bud..Thanks, men..Bernie

I'm with Ray, two finger picks. Try this, (I know it won't be easy) watch it once with the sound off. Look at the concentration and precision. That right pincky never changes. I am a curler, I've never been able to play with my pincky out. His blocking is almost indecernable except when you listen. Very light. That is a REALLY good steel video. And its LG! Wish that cameraman would shoot more steel players.

Hi Walter and all,
I went to the tribute website and listened carefully to several of his performances.
It's hard not to be emotional.
His touch and creativity are incredible even in the 80's when he was not a young steeler anymore, he displays an amazing array of skills like in the
"Lloyd Green at Wembley Country Music Festival" for example.
I am so glad I discovered this super steeler.
Your website is fantastic Walter and contains a wealth of goodies. I can see how influencial he is on many of this forum's players.
Blessings,
Abel

I believe you'll find that this video performance of "San Antonio Rose" is in fact the same one from that Wembley audio on Walter's website. Which raises the question, "Where can we find video of the rest of the tunes from that performance?"His touch and creativity are incredible even in the 80's when he was not a young steeler anymore, he displays an amazing array of skills like in the

Hi Brint,
You are right indeed, it is the same performance and I was mislead to think that the video was made in the late 60's.
I would love to get a video full of performances from him too. I could only find 2 videos on Youtube next to "San Antonio Rose":
- Farewell Party - Lloyd Green ISGC 1992
- Look At Us Jeff Newman / Lloyd Green ISGC 1995
One of the greatest steel masters indeed.
Regards,
Abel
