Australian steel players

Every time I get on the forum there seems to be more and more Aussie steel players,I was wondering how many use the forum and what sort of guitars they play.

I use an S10 Emmons and at home I play on a D10 ZB.

I play MSA Classic D10 into a Steel King, sometimes use a DigiTech RP150.

Hi Ben, I live on the peninsular and play a GFI SD10 through a Fender '76 twin. Also am learning Dobro.
Been playing for about 5 years only at home. Have not yet ventured out though I have palyed in bands (not Country) for about 25 years while living in London.

great . Hey Ian I play a regal square neck as well a black lightning with all he goods in my opininion they're great instruments and Id like to see that 76 twin ashley ,that was the year I was born.I used to use a twin a 72 I think anyho a great amp.Ben

Hi Ben,
I play a ’75 D10 Emmons PP.
Other guitars are listed here
Amps range from a PodXT Pro at work, a bunch of plug-ins (amplitude, Waves etc..)to a Peavey Nashville 112, a beat up mid 70s marshall, and a line6 AxSys.
The genetic timebomb lurking within me went off earlier this year bringing partial paralysis of feet and fingers (cryoglobulinemic vasculitis). I am told this is temporary...but all writing is done with a mouse these days (and my trusty Korg Triton) whilst I learn patience... My guitars call out to me constantly as I am surrounded by them in my studio.

I am finding there are a lot more Australian steel players than I had realised. A lot of them don't get on the forum - they come out of the woodwork now and then.

Australia has 2 world class players in Michel Rose and Tomi Grasso.
Michel can play E9, western swing and jazz as good as anyone I reckon. Tomi Grasso can speed pick like it's going out of fashion - he is amazing to watch.

thanks Ben for starting this post; and its GREAT to have the Forum up again -- thanks b0b!

I'm definitely NOT one of those world class players you all referred to previously in this post. I live in Sydney and play an Excel Superb S12 Uni through a Fender Steel King. I had planned to get to Brisbane this year, but my work program won't allow me ... again!

There's got to be lots of other Aussie pickers out there lurking. Be encouraged to join in and meet up with your fellow Forumites. Learning steel on your own is a long and hard journey; we all need the encouragement of taking the trip together. I'd love to know who you are, where you live and what you play.

You know there a bunch of very GOOD steel players down here in South Australia.
I play an ANAPEG half Universal, although I have two Emmons and a Sierra I am about to take delivery of my second ANAPEG a Universal with 7 peddles and 6 levers. I have waited 5 years for this guitar and have been involved in its manufacture from the selection of the Gigi wood to the colour of the front rail.
Today Noel Anstead emailed me the first Pics. of the finished Guitar,apart from my initials and some extra work on the wheeled case,it will be ready for me to fly to Queensland and take delivery. With any new Anapeg Noel likes the new owner to spend time with him and the guitar, so as to make final adjustments, he likes to allow 2 days for this.As soon as the Picture uploading facility is working again I will post some pictures of this incredible instrument. As most Forum members know ,it is said that Noel Anstead makes the best Steel Guitars in the World. I don't want to start a heated discussion by that last statement--just wait until you see the Pic.'s.

Down here in Wollongong, I played a Marlen D10 through a Fender Vibrosonic Reverb back in the late 70s, also a Dobro 60D. Now I'm returning to the steel after an extended absence.

I have a clear lacquer Carter D10 on the way, with a Fender Steel King amp. Thinking about getting another Dobro too...may as well work the acoustic side of the fence as well as the electric!

Good to see so many of us Down Under, back when I was last active there were probably less than 30 in the whole country! I still remember the first visit Scotty made to the Tamworth Country Music weekend and the morning session/seminar we had with him and Kenny Kitching in a restaurant in Tamworth. Think that was organised by Norm Bodkin if I remember right.

It's nice to be renewing the relationship with such an intriguing instrument.

The Steel Guitar Forum
