Most of the p/p's mentioned on here seem to have single coil pickups.

Why were these preferred over the dual coils, as many Sho-Buds were fitted with dual coils as standard?

Yousure? I thought Sho~Bud pups were single coil standard.

I think Tony means split coils, or pickups that have taps at, say 13K and 20K, as a later (1967) Bolt-on I used to have had in it.
