Oh, I think this song is wide open for pedal steel - made to order. And it's pretty obvious she was playing on the vid. But even the figures seemed, to me, to be washed in synth-strings - which to my ear completely dominated. Except for those figures, it seemed to me that she was playing away, but I heard not a note - and I wanted to.
I don't care about videos being realistic either. Overall, I also thought it sounded good - hey, it's a great song, professionally done. But I really don't care for synth-string wash. Call it a foible.  |

I was looking around for any info about who was in the video and I found a better version of it, and in THIS one, you can hear the steel, it's not covered up with the lousy strings:

The more I look at this video, the more I am convinced that it's NOT Robin in the video. (Also, the more I listen, the more I can't stand Rod Stewart!)
Also, I looked on allmusic.com, and (since this video is clearly a "lip sync" job and not a real live recording) I'm pretty sure the actual steel part we're hearing is being played by Greg Leisz.

Now let's see, we're a bunch of steel lovers who are, for the most part, always ranting and raving that steel never gets any recognition in pop music, or on tv anymore.
Here we have one of the all time most popular pop shows in the world showing multiple steel shots. We're still not happy!
Yes, I wish it had been more prominent in the mix, but it was there, it was seen, and to that end, promoted with pop music.
I like the song, have played steel on it many times. I agree that it is a good pop steel song.
I don't know who the young lady is, which was the original question, sorry.
She is attractive for sure, tats or not. (I'd personally rather not on the tats, but that's just my opinion)
I don't particularly like WATCHING Rod, but he does indeed sing very well in his own style. I liked the way that he made the song his, yet stayed very true to the original, maybe that's my foible!

i like rod, i like the song, and i want a foible!
my thought about videos, which evidently isn't shared by most of you, is that i would prefer to view reality as it relates to the music. watching a steel player or other musician play is more interesting and informative than a video with hippity hop-synched actors with smiley faces, or scenes depicting the dreamlike vision that the video creator wants me to conjure from the song.
my mind is more than capable of conjuring visions and emotions on it's own....the better the song, the better the conjuring! |
