Topic: Bar replacement. When? |

| I have a great BJS bar I have been using for 4 or 5 years now. I was just wondering at what point it may need to be replaced. Last night I was looking at it under a bright light and thought I saw a few hairline scratches....but some of them seemed to "rub out". It's actually kind of hard to tell if the surface has been compromised in any way. Obviously it's toppled over onto my steel a few times and has hit the carpet once or twice. Just wondering what the general consensus is, or if there is one. |

Scott,
I'd continue to use it. Regarding scratches it wouldn't hurt to get some semichrome buffing polish and run it over the buffing wheel. The only way I discard my bars is if I get a deep scratch in it and it graps a string. I have 3 of Bills bars and they are excellent.

| Scott I just gave my 20 year old BJS to one of my students to use and it is still in mint condition. I have 2 new 15/16th bars now but that older one was still in perfect condition so they will last forever if you treat them well. Bill builds them right. |

Scott,
If you can't really tell if the surface has been compromised, it probably hasn't been.
The other good news is, that if it is damaged,or flawed, Bill really does stand behind his product.
I had a bar for several years that (within the first year) developed some light pitting, and some little rust freckles where the chrome hadn't taken as well. I'd guess probably something either got on it, or was missed in the prep process.
I played that bar for more that a decade, keeping the spots up, and away from the strings.
When I finally did get the nerve to mention it to Bill, he simply asked if I would send to him for his inspection. I did, and he sent me a new one. I've been playing it, for several years now and its still perfect. And, you couldnt have possibly dropped yours as much as I have mine. In fact, I'd think there's probably nobody rougher on a bar than I am. |

Scott, my Sacred Steel bar's got scratches on it, but I still use it. Do you have a barholder? Barholders hold steel bars securely. I've got one so I don't have to lay my bar on my steel.
