I was out of town all week attending a company meeting. While I was gone, there was a power glitch in Cloverdale. The Forum load is actually distributed over two servers, a Dell FreeBSD server and a Mac Mini server. Some people couldn't get onto the Forum because their bookmarks pointed at the Dell server instead of the Mac server. Other people had only minor problems.
The portions of the system that were affected are: - The Welcome page
- The Forum catalog (steelguitarmusic.com)
- The UBB archives, for searches of old messages
The power glitch caused an improper dismount of one of the disk partitions on the Dell, which in turn forced it to be a "read-only file system" when the computer came back up. Apache, the web server application, couldn't write to its error log, so it refused to run. No Apache, no web service. _________________ -𝕓𝕆𝕓- (admin) - Robert P. We tend to forget how crucial bOb is to the existence of SGF. Thanks for all the hard work. |

My guess is that the epic and seemingly never-ending study of whether or not we're under- or over-educated filled up the hard drive and blew up the server.... |

No, the server that's crashing is the one that holds the OLD posts, up to 2007, for searchability. Nothing new is being written to it except for the usual log files and such. I think maybe there's a hardware problem. It's been running 24/7 for the past 5 years. _________________ -𝕓𝕆𝕓- (admin) - Robert P. Lee - Recordings - Breathe - D6th - Video |
