Anybody have any ideas on a replacement speaker and tubes to get a little better tone from this amp? It has the Blue Marvel speaker, and 12ax7 tubes (I think that's what the tubes are). I've tried a lot of different settings, just can't find something I really like. Thought maybe a speaker change, and tube job might help.

Terry,Are you using the amp for steel or guitar? And if you are using it for steel are going for a classic country sound?Stu _________________ Steeltronics Z-pickup,Desert Rose S-10 4+5,Desert Rose Keyless S-10 3+5... Well JUst my 2, but the Blue Marvel speakers are hard to beat.
I put a 30w weber bluedog in my Blz Jr, and a 50w BD in my HRdlx 1/12. I really like them.
I've had good luck with Eurotubes, and their newest JJ/Tesla EL84s. In spite of all the semi-information and superstition, they seem to be very good tubes. No more of a crapshoot than any of the others... Maybe if you get ones that are more than a year in stock, because they have had "their issues".
I just retubed my Classic 50 212 with 4 EL84s, and a "high headroom" set: 2 ECC83s and an ECC81 in the 'preamp section'. 67$.
I REALLY like them.
The CL50 212 has a couple Blue Marvels in it, but I don't see any reason to change them out.
If I ever do it'll probably be with Webers. Either BlueDogs, or SilverBells I think they call them.
Last nite at a gig, I FINALLY got out in front to hear somebody else play my tele through my 15watt Blues Jr with the Weber BlueDog 30w speaker in it. ( And a JJ/Tesla "high headroom" retube from ET.
Clear as a Bell. Plenty of volume.
JMHO.

Personally I didn't care for the Blue Marvel in mine when I had it, so I got a Weber Michigan. Another thing is the first preamp tube I changed to a 12AU7, cuts the gain a bit and made it a little sweeter. YMMV. |

I appreciate the help guys. I may just try a tube job first to see if that helps. I'm kinda wishing I'd gotten the Blues Jr now instead of the classic 30.

Terry,I used to have one of the first ones I mainly used for a blues gig with my Strat. While it was working it was great I really cranked up high,I wished they had put a standby switch on it...I went thru tubes a lot. Finally it would short out while the lights stayed on and I sent it back to Peavey. It worked for a while but then started acting up again,I finally gave it to a friend...but when it was working right it was great. _________________ Steeltronics Z-pickup,Desert Rose S-10 4+5,Desert Rose Keyless S-10 3+5... Well Terry the Blues Jr is half the wattage, and I only use it when I can mike it completely or when it's really quiet.

Stu, I hadn't had any trouble out of my classic 30, but hadn't had it but about 4 months.
Eric, yea I know the Blues Jr is only 15 watts, but I played through one at our local music store, and it seemed to have a little warmer tone than my classic. I had never played through a classic 30 when I bought this one off ebay, but I had heard only good things about em. I reckon the extra watts is the main reason I bought it instead of the Blues Jr.
I went from a Fender Deville 2 x 12s, to a Hot Rod Deluxe, to a classic 30. Am I goin backards or what?

I'm with Keith on changing out the first preamp tube. When I had mine a ways back, I was using 5751s to cut the gain a bit and that worked like a charm for me. Experiment with different tubes in that first preamp stage. If I remember correctly, the 5751 is somewhere around 70% of the gain of a 12ax7. And again, YMMV. |

The only amp I have without a standby switch is my Princeton Reverb. My tech changed the rectifier tube to a 5Y4, which warms up slowly. What is the rectifier tube in that amp? |

Classic 30's are solid state rectified.
Great little amp, and that Blue Marvel is actually made by Eminence. A very good speaker. Not a Weber or JBL, but still a very good speaker
I like that idea of a lower gain 1st preamp tube.
I'll try it on mine and see how it goes.
I have only one concern about the C30:
The reverb circuit. Even with the amp at zero volume, when you turn up the verb, you get hum.
It's a solid state circuit driven by a TL072 IC.
I think the hum is coming from the location of the reverb tank or wires.
Anyone else ever addressed this issue?? |

SS rectifier. Not spongey I guess. I know my tech moves the wires inside the chassis of some Fenders to get the hum out of the reverb circuit. But I suppose this amp is all circuit board, right? |

I took the reverb tank OUT of my Classic 50. I never even heard it.
They've come out of ALL of my amps.
All they are is RF antennas.
Good ones at that..

I have a Peavey Classic 30 in which I installed a Celestion "Vintage 30" speaker! I use it for lead guitar and I also use it for steel as well. For the steel (Jackson Blackjack) I run it with bass on 9, mids on 5, treble on 4, and reverb on 2, but I also use a delay pedal set up with just a bit of slapback. Seems to work pretty darn good for me! I also have an old Sho-Bud "Christmas Tree" amp with a 15" JBL and a 60 watt Roland Cube amp. Depending on the gig/venue I can use any one of these amps - most of the time, I mike the amp through the mains.
I really like the Celestion speaker in the Peavey...seems to give me a good clean sound with decent tone. |
