I just wanted to say what a great job I think Tommy Detamore did on Doug Sahm's last album "Return of Wayne Douglas" (2000), particularly on "Beautiful Texas Sunshine."
Listening to it tonight made me think again of what a treasure Doug Sahm was. |

I completely agree with you Mike, Tommy has such a great style, and his tone is some of the best I've ever heard. In fact, I think I have just about every recording that Tommy has played on, including many of Bobby Flores' recordings, and his playing is absolutely stellar on everything he does. Absolutely amazing!! Listening to the recordings that Tommy has played on is a daily "must do" thing here for me. It really makes my day.

I agree completely!
Doug had recorded the occasional great country track before, but it took Tommy to finally help him make the great country album that Doug always had in him. All of Doug's records have their moments but this one's great all the way through, IMHO...
And Tommy's playing is just fantastic! |

To borrow a line from a recent movie, "I concur!" I have nearly worn out the Pauline Reese cd, "The Road to Monterrey" largely due to Tommy's brilliant steel work. The whole band just fits together as well as any I've heard and Tommy's tasteful steel playing is a very large part of that excellent effort! IMHO. |

Tommy is one of my favourite players. Always plays with good taste an good tone.
I have a collection of records recorded by Tommy featuring him on steel as well. Amazing how much good music that's come out of his studio. A great inspiration. _________________ 1983 Emmons D10 SKH, Carter SD10, Nashville 112, Session 500, ProfexII, Lapsteels, GT-Beard reso, guitars of all kinds...

Tommy was over here a few years back, with Clay Blaker & The Texas Honky tonk Band. Nice guy and a great player. But does he sing as well? I have some radio transcriptions (Live from Gilley's), and on one of those, I think Moe Bandy (you know Tommy played with Bandy for eight years) introduces him, as the guy who sings Joe Stampley's part on one of those Moe & Joe duets.
But I'm nor sure. Anyone knows...?

You guys need to check out the Sunny Sweeny CD Tommy played/produced. It is a great album in both performance and sonic quality. In fact, Big Machine Records picked up the CD and released it "as is". You don't see that very often......Kudos to Tommy |

Rick, I can definately relate to your being "hooked on Tommy's" playing and style! That happened to me the very first time I heard him on one of Bobby Flores' fabulous CD's. This guy has style and tone like nothing else I've ever heard! Once you hear Tommy's playing just once, it's like you just can't get enough of listening to him play. He really brings out excitment and deep emotion in every song I hear him playing on. Even songs that I don't particularly like I listen to anyway just to hear his playing. Yes....it really is that good!
Tommy my brother, I hope you live as long as Moses, as you have so much that needs to be heard yet, and a God given talent that all of us are indeed very greatful for. |

Let me add to the chorus here. When I think about all these "tone threads", I just put on a track by Tommy, and I know where the tone bar is set. I listen to his stuff daily to get that tone and style in my brain.
I agree with Ulf - if you don't believe us, go to his steelguitartracksonline website and listen to the examples. He's as good as anybody playing today, IMO. |
