I have been asked to put up some Welsh Country Music by Frank Bloomfield to youtube , here is the first one, maybe frank can tell us more about the people involved in the series , there are some great steel playing from
Ray Kedge and Frank Bloomfield plus Slim Pickins who also plays great fiddle , but most of all the singing although in Welsh is out of this world, Please do watch all the videos otherwise you will miss a real feast of wonderful music. This is the first of five that I am putting up...

Thanks , I was amazed at the great singing and the quality of the bands, more steel players from the UK.
There is also a couple of tracks that are not Welsh,
A very good version of Barbara Mandrell 'Steel Guitar rag' and Wylie's Wild West Show. great steel on that one, well worth a look at.

I just caught up with these videos of Welsh Country.

Boy am I ever impressed ?

Take a note....all participants dressed for the occasion.....no tank-tops or ripped jeans.

Beautiful singing all round

and bands that played so that EVERY nuance of voice, steel, bass, rhythm ect could be heard and appreciated, one could tell what each and every person was doing AND a drummer that DIDN`T drown everyone out.....man alive I`d die to play with a band like that :)

Does anyone have any further information on where these videos were taken ?..I`m planning a trip to the UK shortly and would definately go to see these people even if I didn`t understand a word...the music presentation said it all :)

six thumbs up on this one .

Glyn,Here is message i found on the British steel forum
from Frank Bloomfield the man playing the ZB.
Well, this has come as a bit of a surprise really but first a big thank you to
our Slim Pickins who supplied the footage of these shows from way back
in the '80's and onwards. I don't know much about the shows that were
recorded with Slim and Ray, I can only comment on the ones I played on
for S4C called "Heno' which means, I think, "Tonight". We were the Glen
Denver Duo,all four of us ! and the show went out live. We got to the studio
at 2'clock in the afternoon to set up and sound check, we did'nt actually play
until five to seven in the evening and could not leave the studio either so we
had to hang about doing sod-all all afternoon ! To say I was nervous would
be a mighty understatement , I kept the playing as simple as possible to lessen
the chances of mistakes because as I said, it was going out live.
As John said the singing was excellent even if we did'nt understand a word !
Bought back some good memories.

Welsh Country Music

Hallo Glyn ( nows there's a Welsh name if ever I heard one !!)
Many thanks for taking the time and trouble to watch
and listen to the Welsh country music that John put
on the Forum, it was great fun doing it.
Basically, only the singers were Welsh speaking, most
of the musicians were imported from England, even
though I lived in Wales (Swansea) I am,in fact,
English, born in Royal Tunbridge Wells,Kent. The two
steelies on the recorded shows were Ray Kedge who is
back playing again now he's given up working for a
living like me ! (actually we're both retired now)
and good 'ole Slim Pickins, a very good mate (he was
also best man at my wedding)and a superb steel player
and a very funny comedian.
I'll see if I can find out where and when they're
playing when you come over and let you know.As for
me, I live with my wife on the island of Corfu,Greece
and play in a pop-ish duo for the holidaymakers
called "The Good 'ole Boys",
Thats about all I can tell you about the sessions
for Welsh Country Music (thats about the only thing
We miss here, good old country music ),once again
thanks for showing interest.
Anything else you want to know just get in touch.
All the best

Ray,

Good seeing you there mate, but that's not a website you've put up. Should have www. before it, but it still looks like an e'mail without the @ sign???

Wonder what Lindsey is doing these days? Solid steady Bass player. By the way have you got your new Bennett steel yet??

Cheers,

Micky Byrne

Hi Paul and Ray,
many thanks for your replies, I will certainly be in contact when the time comes to take a trip back to my old home town in Hertfordshire....haven`t been back there since we left for Australia in 1954....I`m now in Canada and `almost` back home again :)

Ray..that web site you gave worked for me and I got to have a nice little read about Nashville Sounds and it`s members...thanks.

I`d like to remain in touch with both of you if that`s ok

Spoke to Ronnie yesterday he thinks by the end of Feb now.He has been snowed under with small jobs, also trying to find coloured mica is a problem these days,he has all the mechanics and body done and will be putting all his time in on the guitar in the next 3 weeks, really looking forward to the arrival.
