I got the following e-mail from Indian lap slide monster Debashish Bhattacharya, who will be teaching some master classes in America in a few months -

Residency & Workshop at Residence of Madhavi and Nitin Maniar

42 Aspen Drive, Livingston, NJ 07039 USA .

Workshop Format:

Teachers: Pandit Debashish Bhattacharya, Smt Sutapa Bhattacharya and Sri Subhasis Bhattacharya

Each participant student during residency will experience:

1) 4 individual classes.

2) Group Classes on -
a) Singing b) Chanting c) Rhythm Patterns and d) Yoga-Guitar/Yoga-Singing

3) Group-composition making class.

4) Jam sessions every evening with the teachers/without the teachers

5) Performance of the participant at the final day.

Participants are requested to bring their individual instruments and sleeping bag.

You know, I'm usually in agreement with the Jimmy Day quote.

In Debashish Bhattacharya's case, I've got to admit that if I could play like THAT, I would!

Eastern music isn't organized around chord progressions like it is in the West, so a chord wouldn't make much sense in what they are playing. This music is modal.

What's funny is that it's all (East and West) based on the same thing: the Overtone Series. We just approach it chordally, and they approach it modally. Definitely worth a look:
