| Wiz,,,I'm still trying to get my programs from old computer to new one,,,I've copied my MS Office 11 program to a CD,,but when I put the CD in my new computer it gave me options,,one of which was to save to desk top and create shortcut,,which I thought would do the trick,,,wrong! When I open it all I get is a bunch of icons (folders or files ???) How do I get the program to work on this new computer? It doesn't show up in my programs list?? |

| Programs can't be "copied" over. They must be "installed" using the programs installation program. e.g. for Office you will need the original Office installation CD. |

Sonny;
You cannot "transfer" a program by just copying its files from computer A to computer B. You absolutely must run the install program for the application. MS Office has the installer on the original CD and that is what you will need to install it onto another computer, along with a new Office Validation code, unless your version allows for more than one installation.
There is no legal way around the requirement to have a valid license for multiple computer use of a given program. Some allow more than one, but many do not.

I stated in my last post that a program, such as MS Office, that requires validation to allow it to function, may only allow it to be installed on one computer. While that may be true, some manufacturers of these programs may allow you to install that program on a different computer is you first remove it from the previous one. In the case of Office 2003, you could reinstall the program 4 times, for a total of 5 installations, before you were denied use of it. Microsoft tracks the usage of validation codes, but a phone call to their licensing support department will usually get you a new validation code, as long as you are removing it from an old computer and installing to a new one.

| Hey guys,,thanks for the response,,,not exactly what I "wanted" to hear,,LOL. Actually, I've looked everywhere for the old disc,,,no can find,,,soooo,, I thought well I'll just copy it over to the new one. So I guess if I want this program on my new computer I'll just have to cough up the (big!) $$$ for a new program???? |

What happens if you buy a computer with the programs installed from the factory and you have to reinstall them for some reason?
Are you just up a creek without a paddle?. |

| HERE is the link to Open Office. They have a free (but take donations) alternative to MS Office. They have compatible programs for everything except Outlook. |

| Hey Jack,,thank you VERY much,,,actually,,,I don't (or can't) "use" excel,,,all I need is something to read XL files that I receive from time to time. I guess Open Office would suffice for that?? |

| Well I just found a disc titled "MS Works and Money",,which I think is the disc that came with this computer,,,and has a less extensive version of XL on it that will serve my purpose. Any opinions??? |

| I've used open office and it works just as good as MS Office. They even have a version you can run from a thumb drive/ memory stick. My daughter used it on her thumb drive in case she was ever using a pc that didn't have Office installed. |

Yes Sonny, MS Works does have a lite version of the spreadsheet used in Excel, but Open Office has a full featured equivalent. Try installing Works, full install. If that doesn't help, download Open Office, which is a huge download.

Another vote for OO. I've been using it on Mac (actually, the Mac version is NeoOffice), Linux and Windows for quite a while and never had any compatibility issues working with M$ Office documents. M$ Works is a lame, featureless app. M$ Office is bloated and expensive and there's no reason to use it unless you're at work and your company has paid for its license.

Another vote for NOT using MSWorks. Either get the Excel reader (which is still not full featured) or the Open Office or MS Office.
As the Open Office is a large download, if you don't have a broadband internet connecton, get a friend that does have a broadband to download it and then burn it to a CD for you. |

Jim, OO can read Excel files. Not sure about Excel reading OO files, but I'm pretty sure it does. Anyway, you can save OO documents in M$ Office format.
Edit: I just tried opening a NeoOffice (Mac version of OO) spreadsheet with Excel, on a Mac, and there's no convenient way to do it. You might get different results with Windows Excel and OO.

Microsoft has a free Excel document viewer available for downloading, here. It is compatible with Excel documents produced in versions up to 2003. There is a compatibility pack available for download, on the same page, for Office 2007 documents.
Important! There are exploits in the wild for this version of Excel viewer, so, if you install it, go immediately to Windows Updates and get the patch to secure it. You must also apply all Windows Updates patches before installing the Office Compatibility Packs, for the document viewers.
