My cat normally doesn't get to share my steel, as it is in my office in the barn. Right now we're living in our travel trailer in TX., and the instrument is set up in the living room. I have a cover for it, and the cat can lay on it all she wants. She doesn't seeem to be able to affect the tuning. A couple of weeks ago she sat on the pack a seat, leaned over, and plucked a string witn one of her front teeth. I wish I'd had the camera handy. Our last cat probably has more seat time than me. He'd lay on it all day while I was at work. My wife went through a lot of masking tape keeping the seat hair free. John

Cats and Steels
Mike P, maybe the cat could use a .22 caliber slug for a steel. I guess technically, cats have built-in fingerpicks. Cool picture !

Well, these cats very diligent in their resting habits. I think I'll get a D2F cover and fagedaboutit.

My cat got on top of my PSG the first day I had it. Jim Palenscar recommended putting tin foil on top. I put a towel over it first and then the tin foil. I left it that way for about a week and then used a fitted PSG cover. That was over 6 months ago and the cat has not tried to get on it since then.

My Ragdoll
My wife and I had poor luck with our cat in 2007. We looked at the selection process on ASPCA and decided that a Ragdoll was the best choice and time has confirmed that it was a good choice. Here is Keiko, a blu-creme torti female pedigree Ragdoll. She is 10 months old and her personality is as lovely as her picture. Keiko weighs about 12 pounds but she doesn't affect the tuning.

So far, my new baby tabby cat "Hank Williams" has managed to stay off of my steels...amps are another story.
Lastnight, my roommate's cat "Admiral Douche-ington" was sitting on the keyhead of my Pro-1. I wasn't really thrilled about that.
Here is a pic of me & Hank Williams:
Here is a picture of me with my friend Erin's cat. If this cat was on your guitar, it would probably crack it in half!!! It put the MASS in MASSIVE!!!

"been playin' since they's babies...."
Furry steel pickers, huh? Nice pictures, everyone. Good luck with that dilemma Cliff. Micky, it looks like Lilly has got her paw-blocking down pat! Cheers John Richmond

This is Zoey. She's not so much into lying on my steel when I'm not playing it, but when I practice she sometimes likes to play with my feet. She used to do this more when she was younger. She's 17 now and mostly just lies abut the house.

Does anyone know how to stop cats from scratching on amps...besides buying covers for them all???
My roommates cat, the aforementioned Admiral Douche- ington, seems to take great pleasure in scratching my amps. I could've killed her the night I walked in & saw her scratching the heck out of my brand-new looking LTD 400!!!
Any help, especially firsthand knowledge, is greatly appreciated.
Thanks so much,
Casey

We have seven cats at the moment. When my daughters were young they used to adopt about every cat that came their way, and I was too softhearted to say, "No!" Now the girls have grown up and left home and I'm stuck with the cats. They never get near my instruments, which are in the basement and sub-basement. Four of the cats stay outdoors and the other three are only allowed upstairs.
You're at great risk by just laying a towel over your steel. Sooner or later they will decide to mark their territory and it could ruin its appearance. I recommend that at the very least you buy one of those vinyl PSG covers that Bobbe Seymour sells. They're completely waterproof.
I have several of them. They're excellent and very durable. Here's one covering and protecting a Miller while I'm working on a Fender on top. As you can see, I have very little room in my workshop. It could be said that there's not enough room to swing a cat, but, as I've mentioned, there are no cats in the sub-basement to swing...
