A tune for your enjoyment....or maybe not

Post by Dick Wood »

Well I didn't play in the band this weekend which is rare so I drug out the recorder and threw something together for fun.

I'm using Jeff Newman's Honky Tonk Hero's tracks direct to a Yamaha AW4416 board with a little reverb and that's it.

Enjoy

Thanks Paul,

When I play in the band I play a Williams D-10 Hilton pedal,Fender Steel King and a Boss Delay pedal.

For the recording I just used the Williams,an Ernie Ball Volume pedal straight to the recorder with a little reverb but no delay and a pretty flat EQ.

Very good Dick and some real tasteful playing. How did you get that steel tone, just fantastic. I've got the Korg recorder and haven't found that setting.

Hello Henry,

I'm not doing anything other than setting the EQ almost flat with the lows basically flat, mids and highs slightly boosted.

The Williams has a BL710 pickup and I used an Ernie Ball pot pedal cuz my Hilton wasn't handy at the time and I put a litrtle reverb in it to wet it up so it wouldn't sound too hard in the mix.

I recorded the backing track first and then just played along.

There are a few minor glitches where I felt my string attack and phrasing could have been better but I was bored and this was just for fun and not a well thought out polished project.

Here is the recorder I used.

Man I wish we played around here but unfortunately all our jobs are in or around Dallas.

Our website is www.cobymcdonald.com and I'd be very happy to meet you if you want to drive to Dallas sometime.

Check out the website which has our schedule on it along with some pretty stunning pics of me...lol

Henry if you want to get a tone like Dick has, you will need to purchase a Williams PSG with a BL710 pickup. :)

David,

Thanks for the nice words.

I started taking lessons in 1981 and played in bands solid until I got burned out and went into the Police Academy in 1992 so I stopped playing for about two years.

Then around 1995 a friend called and wanted to hire me so I dusted the steel off and haven't stopped since.

New years went great. We played Southern Junction in Rockwall for a packed house.

Sounds like y'all had a bunch of fun too. I've played Coal Miners Club in Malakoff which isn't too far from where you were.

This year will most likely be as busy as last year was. We had three weekends off all year playing 3-4 nights every week around Dallas.

One of these nights I'm gonna come see you play if I ever get free.

Dick; That is the best version of steel playing on Ricky's big hit, that I've had the privelege of listening to. Absolutely fantastic; Love the sound of your Williams. Every thing was just perfect; If you are going to be at the Dallas Show; let me know what time you will be playing The " Williams Booth". I'd consider it an honor to shake your hand, Dick. :whoa: :D [/b]

Lovely Playing Dick, but don't I hear a touch of "Chorus" as well as a "Little Reverb" in the steel sound ?

Hi Basilh

First, thanks so much for the compliment and no there's no chorus, only Hall Reverb.

I tend to use a rolling vibrato which is most likely what you hear.

I believe I've developed a bad habit of using a little too much vibrato in my playing which came to my attention on in live recordings.

It's funny how you never notice these things night after night of playing clubs but then one night it hits you.

Bernie,

It would be very nice to meet you. I will be at the show on Saturday but not playing cuz I'm a big chicken.

Bill Rudolph said he'd be at this show so I will be at the Williams booth at some point since I've only talked with him by phone.

Hope to see you in March which happens to be the month of my birthday so this would be the perfect chance for you to pick out a great big present for me while you're there!

basilh wrote:Dick, the two internal multi-effects processors stem from the O1V, and the "Hall Reverb" has delay and a lot of other functions as part of its parameters. It's not just a plain reverb..But that's OK you playing isn't that plain either..

Basilh,

I may be wrong. I've only used this recorder three times since buying it last year.

I thought that Hall Reverb was just Hall Reverb and nothing more unless you selected REV+CHORUS but you never know so I'll go back and look at the settings.

BTW-hope to meet you if you plan on coming to the show.

You're right about the possibility of Hall-Chorus combined, but what I'm saying is that the BASIC Hall reverb has Early reflection, Diffusion,Highpass filter, lo pass filter, Initial delay, early reflection delay etc. all of which are far from 'Plain ol' Reverb'

You have a great sound we shouldn't get tied up in the technicalities of how, Primarily it's the Player and the way he uses the tools, in this case it's You and how you do it that counts..
