Our eyes were wide open when we saw this video clip from Willie Nelson on myspace.com
Is this Morbid?Is it thoughtful?Or did Willie loose a couple sandwiches along the way?The lyrics are straight to the point....but what is he really trying to accomplish with this song and video clip?

I know that Willie lost a son(Billy) to suicide and suspect the lyrics elude to that. No parent should have to bury a child. I can relate to that.
I like the song. |

Basically what I was referring to was the video clip.Not in the first place the lyrics.I did say that the words were straight to the point.
Whether you like the song or not is not what I was asking.A singer that brings out a video clip where he shows himself being buried is in my eyes pretty morbid.I have seen clips about the same subject and they were not that repulsive. |

I thought the video reinforced the mood of the song, which was indeed at least bleak if not morbid. I suspect that that is what was intended. I thought it was very effective. And the black and white really drove it home. Superlative. As I get older I find myself thinking about death more frequently than I used to. I'm not nearly Willie's age. I'll bet he thinks about it more often still.

The actual video can be seen on Amazon, and it's only the last few seconds that shows Willie in the coffin, up until then he's portrayed the driver, priest and grave digger. If you only watch the stills "video" on MySpace you get a different impression since they show the image of him in the coffin several times.

| Pretty cool...reminds me a bit of Johnny's "Hurt", in that it touches on heavy stuff like life and death, mortality, and emotional pain. And yes, a welcome relief from the rest of the sappy stuff on CMT and GAC. Morbid? I don't think so. |

Steinar you beat me to it, but in any case Willie only "lost it" when he let Kenny Sh--ney get involved. The take is good and the message, even though subtle, is relevant to those of us who have experienced it or will shortly, but eventually will be accomplished by everyone.

I think it's pretty powerful, but I don't think it's morbid at all. It sounds like a man facing mortality - his own and those around him. I like it a lot.
There are also some clear anti-war allusions in the second verse. |

"Gravedigger" is a Dave Matthews Band original. I remember when it came out about five years ago. Willie's cover sounds very similar.
Funny thing, what Mike mentioned about Johnny Cash's "Hurt", which is a cover of a Nine Inch Nails song. Is this how country ledgends do it nowdays? |
