- just my personal page, we haven't recorded any song samples with my new band yet, so we didn't make a Myspace-Band-Site yet, either.

I'd post mine, but...hey, there it is down in my sig line!

Good hello, everyone--I've lurked here for a couple of years, but after reading the lively discussion on Harry Partch in the Music section, I decided it was time to pony up and get in on the fun.

It's in the sig line below.

No lap steel, all solo guitar.

3 tracks of bottleneck electric resonator and one track of regular electric with no sliding at all.

Recorded about a year ago, right before I got slightly better quality recording gear. Of course.

More production notes on the site.

I just created mine recently and I'm new to the whole myspace thing so it's still under construction. Check it out and feel free to give tips.

One thing I'm wondering is what the "friends" thing is about and what is the proper etiquette for adding friends?

When I tried to sign up for a My Space account, I somehow got everything turned around where it all comes up in Spanish language, Espanyo. Since I'm not a Mexican and can't speak that stuff can someone help me and get it strightened out?

Mine is down there in my signature, just posted some new dobro/mando tunes.

Mark, by inviting and adding friends to your page, you form a network of people to share your music, ideas and information regarding cd's/gigs etc with.

If you visit someones' page that you would like to be "friends" with, just click the "add to friends" link. They have the option to approve or deny of course, but most people will accept friend requests, I would expect most forum members would accept fellow forum-ites requests!

I cannot access myspace from my work computer, however I will be sending you a request as soon as I get home  .

Happy Ney Year to you all.

Just go for it, people will confirm or deny as they see fit.

There are a few different categories as I see them:

There are friends (and family) who I actually know in real life, and there are people I know from internet forums like this one. Obviously that's your personal network, the people you're in touch with.

There are what I think of as contemporaries, performers who are working now or starting out. Some of them I've found out about from various places and sent a request to, and I've had requests from various musicians and, on occasion, discovered someone I really enjoy who I'd probably never have heard of any other way. That's the real joy of MySpace, in my opinion.

There are also "friends" I think of as inspirations - well established musicians (and, for me, other kinds of artists whose work I find inspiring) who I'll add to acknowledge the fact that I love their work. Some of these are connected to the actual artist, usually run by their record company or management or whatever, and some are run by fans.

The last ones I mentioned are good to have because people will look through the "friends" list of a famous performer, Neil Young for instance, and discover some unknown person - you or me, for instance - and like what we're doing. And musicians like to network: they might like your work and you might like theirs.

I have a look and a listen before I approve those requests, because some bands are obviously just trying to add everyone on earth regardless of any interest you might have in their material, but I approve anyone who's doing something that does interest me.

There are also porn sites and spammers, so you have to be careful of who you approve, but it only takes a moment to check, and if you add someone who turns out to be inappropriate, you can delete them or even block them so you never hear from them again.

It is time consuming, but you can find some really good unknown musicians just by following links. If you have the time, try. If not, just wait for the people who do have the time to find you - they will.

Dean and Dave,
Thanks for the info, now I know. I will gladly accept requests from anyone on this forum. I don't currently have a way to record but I'm working on it. At some point I'll upload some stuff so that you guys can hear what I've been up to.

One more thing, I've attempted to look for people that I know have myspace pages but couldn't find them using the search feature... am I missing something?

It depends on the name they've chosen for myspace. If you don't know the name, you can't find them, and if they've chosen a common name, you'll get 293754 responses to your search.

The other thing is, having looked at your page, you should create a "band" page, not a personal one, which makes adding original music and listing gigs and that kind of thing possible.

http://signup.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=bandjoin

You CAN'T transfer one type of identity to another - I spent months trying to make it happen, and it's just not possible. MySpace claim it's possible, but they're either lying or they just can't be bothered actually enabling it.

Either way, it's best to start as a music site now rather than adding friends that you'll just have to try to re-add to a new identity later on when you're ready to upload your music.

Dave,
I used the "artist signup" to create my page, was that not right? I assume that the music player goes on the page when you upload music? When I edit my profile it has the band bio and gig date stuff.

From Bobbe's myspace page:
"Bobbe is changing people's perceptions of steel guitar. You've never heard it like this before."

Wowie! Your right. Man, I REALLY like that Simone in Blue song!

Sorry, my mistake, I guess I didn't look close enough. You did right. I feel a bit silly now, but what I wrote is good advice for anyone who hasn't created a site yet, so I'll let it stand.

Thank you Mark, as you can tell, this album isn't for traditional steelers, I'm trying to get the rest of the world on board.

I've worked with Donna off and on for the past 12 years. She's a great singer. Check out "Willow Weep For Me" to hear some great dobro playing from my buddy Dave Meis (I'm playing mandolin).
